Ross Barkley

I do blame martinez for barkley this season but it is worrying that barkley cannot play on the wings considering all his skills and pace?

Even Iniesta isn't that good on the wing and that's playing for Barcelona. They are specialist positions. No one would dream of shoving McCarthy, Barry, Besic or Gibson, out there so why Ross?

The whole Barkley on the wing thing seems like a bit of a scapegoat to me. Whenever he played 'on the wing', he spent the majority of the game playing towards the middle providing us with no width? Whilst mcgeady would be stealing a living as an actual winger, should we be playing him in the middle because he's [Poor language removed] on the wing?

Also some of his best shots etc, and cutting inside jobs (see kiev away) came from play on the wing (whether or not that was where he was 'positioned' this is where he found himself on the pitch doing his best moments). If he's good enough he should be able to at least not be anonymous to a game when he's playing on the wing.

The difficulty with a winger is sticking on the sideline and waiting for the ball. Something Ross struggles to do as he wants to pick up the ball and run with it and is not patient enough to wait for the play to come to him, he is attracted to the play. This is why he is more of a threat in the middle of the park rather than the wing because he doesn't have to move far to collect the ball. It's also for this reason I would prefer to see him replace barry next season and form a new holy trinity with besic and mccarthy

I hope he plays alongside Henderson against Italy.

Personally I don't think he's going to make it at the top level as a No10 and definitely not as an inside forward and besides England have 3 or 4 players all ahead of him now in those positions. The only chance he has really of starting in international football is to take Carrick/Wilshire's position and personally I think that's the same at club level.

The boy needs to learn to work and get stuck in which there's still more than enough time for.

When he's played behind the striker this season he's been just as bad as he had been out on the wing, he's just had a poor season. Simple as that.
With no tournament this Summer he can get a proper rest and hopefully Barry doesn't injure him days before the season starts.

“I’m a striker,” he said. “I feel I can have my greatest impact there because I’m free to roam around the pitch, take players on, have shots and create chances.”

I can understand to a degree the bashing of ross this season because some of his play has been sloppy, he is struggling adapting to the first choice number 10 who should be assisting a lot more goals than he has done, but this has not been helped by the tactics employed by RM. He is commonly picking the ball up surrounded by opposing players due to the build up play being so slow. This is having a knock on effect with the rest of our performance hence we have struggled to score goals. Added to this he is not a david silva/ inesta/ mata type of number 10 who plays through balls for the striker, I see him developing more into a box to box midfielder who is more predominatly focussed on attacking. Picking up the ball from centre backs/ fullbacks and carrying the ball forwards, this is why I feel we should adopt a 4-3-3 formation as it would suit our players more rather than the 4-2-3-1. Ross would pick the ball up deeper and have the authority to move with the ball then find his pass/shot. The other 2 midfielders with him are more defensive bais (mccarthy and besic) so he shouldn't have to worry too much if a move breaks down, but not having this worry will give him a greater sense of freedom to express his undoubted talent which I feel he has been harnessed by our passing game this season.

Just seen this guys.

Barkley says his best position is a striker.

Edit: will make this easier for people and post the writing.

“I’m a striker,” he said. “I feel I can have my greatest impact there because I’m free to roam around the pitch, take players on, have shots and create chances.”

“From my point of view I haven’t done as well as I know I can, but things like this happen,” Barkley said. “You have to go through bad days to get to the great days you have in your career.

“We haven’t been going through the best period at the moment, but we’re going to come through this and be really good at the end of it.

“I don’t feel pressure. I believe in myself and I know what I can do. It’s not me feeling pressure, it’s just me putting pressure on myself if I don’t do my best, and I know I can do better.

“I just focus on getting better every day, putting things right in training and then hopefully what I’m doing right in training I’m doing to show in games as well.”

A boyhood Blue, Barkley says playing for Everton is a “dream come true.”

“I’ve been an Everton fan all my life and being able to play for Everton right now is a great feeling,” he said. “It’s an incredible feeling, coming out onto the pitch. I dreamt of it ever since I was young, looking around at all the fans cheering us on, and I got my debut when I was 17. It was a dream come true.

“It’s a really big thing. I’ve dreamt of it ever since I was a youngster, and I’ve always dreamed about playing for Everton. Coming from the city, where Everton’s based, it’s just really good for me.”
