Ross Barkley

He didn't when he played CM against QPR at home earlier this season. Him and Besic got stuck in and won plenty of tackles and Ross ran that game.

I think that being shunted out to the wing the next game against Southampton was the breaking point in terms of his confidence.
My nan couldve run the show against Qpr

Indeed. His position in the team has not been ideal this season, however it is both simplistic and naive to blame this solely for his poor form.

I can count on one hand how many games I'd suggest Ross has played 'well' in during this season. That's worrying for such a potential talent.

It would be unfair to simply dismiss his performance against QPR, although when you place it into the overall context it isn't as remarkable.

They were all over the place and couldn't buy a draw away from home, let alone a win. You'd expect Ross to shine under those circumstances.

Deep down I think we all know the issues are not his physical ability as they are clear to see. Instead, it's the mental attributes which are lacking.

Far too often he looks lethargic, unwilling to commit (to tackles or moves) and his decision making is concerning to say the least.

If he doesn't find some fight in his game, then he'll struggle to apply the skills he undoubtedly has. Maybe he already believes the hype...

Because hes not disciplined enough against decent teams, and he bottles a lot of challenges

Oh come on, how many teams outside the top 7 have actually bothered taking the game to us at Goodison? You can't tell me that having a forward thinking player like Barkley in there wouldn't have helped us more than constantly playing Barry.

The thing about EFC's midfield is that mc Carthy has to play. But his game is tearing around winning the ball. That means that a holding, defensive midfielder has to play.

Barkley is not a defensive midfielder so he has to play off Lukaku.

It's a good point this. I sometimes wonder if we should go with a 4-3-3 - Gibson holding and starting off attacks, McCarthy hooning around all over the shop and Barkley picking up from deep and running at the opposition.

I won't judge Ross under Martinez. As has been seen with Coleman Martinez can take one of the premier league's best right backs and turn him into a pub player. Name one player who has looked good this season under Martinez? Lukaku Baines Jagielka Stones Coleman Mirallas - these were some of the starts of the premier league yet have been woeful at times this season. Why does Ross take the brunt of the rap though? Everyone has seen his talent, so what is more likely, that he has lost it, isn't that good, or just has no idea now what he is doing because he is out of position in a team formation that doesn't work and every bit of individuality he had has been drained out of him by a clown of a manager?

Even against Kiev he could have won the tie for us by himself. How many other players in our team can do that? Maybe Lukaku, that is it. For me I think he is a better player than McCarthy will ever be (literally what doe she do but run around?) but will eventually get driven out of the club by ridiculous fans and a ridiculous manager who don't appreciate him. Fast, strong, two footed, and can finish, and yet we stick him out on the wing getting no service from the crabs in midfield. A manager with some cojones would bench Barry and McCarthy and stick Gibson and Barkley in the middle and watch them run the show. As usual though you get managers more worried about 'defending' the middle of the pitch than winning the game. ('defending' in commas as playing three defensive mids has really worked out well for us defensively hasn't it....not)

I keep hearing about his so called weak mentality. Is this the same player who came back from a triple leg break, from Moyes dropping him for the penalty mess up to become the sort of player that rocks up away at the Emirates and bosses the likes of Wilshere and Ramsey, who runs the length of the pitch against Newcastle ignoring Lukaku because he backed himself, who curled in first time against City when any fan would have forgiven him for not doing so. Thankfully its a good job he doesn't have the mentality of a Ronaldo or a Rooney because quite frankly he would have left this pathetic sinking ship stinking of mediocrity a long time ago. Yet for being a loyal blue wanitng to play for his home club he gets abused most games.

We will waste the best English player since the last one out the academy we wasted. Only at Everton could we put '85p of every £1.00' into an academy which then produces Rooney and Barkley only to then play them both on the wing.

He will get bored of all of this soon enough and will go to Chelsea, City or United where a top manager will play him every game in his correct position every week and will reap the benefit when he becomes the best central mid in the prem. Meanwhile Martinez will be thinking whether he can start on the left so that Barry and McCarthy can play or whether Naismith or Kone could start ahead of him - absolute ridiculous joke of a manager.

.....that's a very lengthy post, but hey ho.

Barkley must play centre mid alongside McCarthy.

The whole balance of the side would be instantly sorted.

Ten games in he would be bossing it for the next ten years.

His defending is not as bad as people make out. Work rate can be taught and he competes well for 50 50s.

Rom would get the proper strike partner he needs.

Barry is fading and Gibson has injury issues anyway. Get Barkley in there now.

So you missed the season before!?!

A few things wrong with this post:
  • Coleman had his best ever season with us under Martinez
  • Barkley broke into the team under Martinez
  • He hasn't played on the left since early January, he's been played in his favourite position but still been poor
That said I agree that the abuse Barkley gets at Goodison is uncalled for. Hopefully Ross can just use the rest of the season to start looking like the player we know he can be and come back next year better than ever.
