Ross Barkley

Strange how he was so good last year. He's either being given different instructions from management or teams have just shut him down and know how to keep him quiet.
Hoping he gets back on it next season.

He looks lost at the moment.
Lets hope the coaches do their job in the summer and sort him out.
Its worrying to see him and kev go so far backwards this season, lets hope the rest and the coaching staff sort the problem

Play him deeper with McCarthy, get an Eriksen-esque player (or Number 10) in front
I think he could benefit from changing our system to something more Mourinho's esque. One holding midfielder (Besić or Barry) and two runners from deep in McCarthy and Barkley. Macca has got a great engine so he could cover for Ross if he made some positional mistakes and we always have one player behind them to stop opposition or hold the ball when in posession.

Let him play deeper, cut his responsibility and let him use his physical abilities. When you play at AMC you need to be creative, make good decisions with and without the ball and have ability to play that killer pass - Ross hasn't got it.

Thing is, was he that good last year. He had some great moments and more of an impact at times but he still had large portions of time were he was making the same mistakes but the goals and the odd surging run over shadowed it

Literally just wrote the first sentence word for word then saw yours. People have clouded judgement and hazy memories. You're spot on.

Barkley wasn't "so good" last year. He was average with some highlights throughout the season. This year he had his excuses of

"he's bad because he's on the wing"
"he's bad because Lukaku isn't helping him"
"he's bad because Osman is beside him"
"he's bad because he needs a rest"
"he's bad because he's trying too hard"

It goes on and on, it's been a write off season for most of the players, but Barkley at times has looked like a fan picked to play on the pitch.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with this mate. I'll pick out two games for you. Firstly, the Merseyside Derby in November. He ran the midfield that day, against an in form Gerrard and Henderson, making them and all around him look decidedly average. This was against a Liverpool side who were flying and they couldn't handle him.

Second game was Arsenal away. Likewise Arsenal flying at the top of the league, and Barkley again bossed the midfield in way few others in Europe could have done.

He has struggled this season, for form and consistency. He has been poor, though there have still been some good performances. While he is certainly not playing to the above level this season, it would be a mistake to say he has been awful every game. He needs a break and to come back stronger next season.

He's yet to have a summer off to relax since making the full Everton squad. Under 20 world cup summer 2013 and senior world cup last summer. Its surely got to have an impact on a young player.

If he goes to this summers U21 Euro's, that will be 3 summers in a row that he hasn't rested. I think with him not having a break has slightly impacted his performances and consistency. Lets also not forget that he will surely be involved with the senior squad next summer for the Euro's too. That could be 4 summers and 5 continuous seasons of playing football without any kind of break.

Thats my point entirely, There was highlights. Not a consistent season. This season he has been consistent at least...consistently poor.

The coaching staff over the years have all failed Barkley. They have completely failed to harness his talents and particular strengths whilst driving out his deficiencies. We hear of specialist coaches for keepers and for strikers -- how about for midfielders?

Why oh why aren't we playing him in midfield? Stick him there and he'll dominate matches. He has everything to be the best midfielder in the world yet we keep shifting him all over the shop.

It still confuses me how he says his preferred position is up top yet he's 21 and still never played there. Worth a shot in pre-season? He's less of a risk up there when losing the ball and I think if he only has the defense to face down and not trying to break through midfield too he might prosper. Kind of like a CF playing just off Lukaku. Intrigues me.

I think going to the under 21's tournament could be a welcome break for him. A chance to regain some confidence and kick on next season.

Look at Messi in his younger years, he played every international tournament in the summers for 6 years in a row. Under 20's, world cup, copa America and Olympics.

I think he needs a bit of confidence and playing against people his own age with a lack of experience will be ideal for him.
