I've been a big fan of Ross from the day he made his debut and will support him untill he's had at least 200 starts in the 1st team

Makes me laugh the stick he gets and some players get a free ride
Like McCarthy was shocking for the 1st half of the season and was poor for 5/6 games after his injury
Ok so he finished the season with better form but he was hardly playing like a world beater

And in the POTY thread he's getting picked out by loads of people as our POTY

The previous post about jags having a poor month try a poor 4 months and IMO only looked good when stones was alongside him

Look at Ramsey for arsenal signed at 17 took him a few years to settle in then had a bad injury
But even after coming back from his Injury he was still very inconsistent for a couple of years
And getting plenty of stick off the fans

It was last year that he finally started to look the player everyone thought he would be
But hasn't been as good this year so even at 24/25 he's stll inconsistent

And bale at Spurs was awful for 3yrs wasn't on the winning side once was getting dropped abd taken off in games
Rumour was Spurs were on the verge of selling him for 5mil to forest
Then he found his form and confidence and never looked back

WItshire and the Ox, I know both have had injury problems but are still very inconsistent

Even sterling, he's had 3 full seasons in and around the Liverpool 1st team with no injuries I think he's started over 100 games and 23 goals?
Last season he looked fantastic but was that down to Suarez sturidge & coutinho
He hasn't looked no where near the player this season and has been poor the last 3 months

One thing I would say about Ross is he's looked better playing for England I know he's not playing every game and only getting 30minutes at a time
But against Italy I thought he was great
Quick to move the ball never gave it away, lost it once when turned into trouble
Is it because he's playkng with better players and players who move

The Sunderland game where he got a lot of stick for holding onto the ball to long at times
I've watched it back and he had no one moving

Lukaku had his back to goal wanting the ball to feet, osman was the same coming off the left flank
Barry was just behind him and McCarthy was only 5 yards away

Sunderland had come and parked the bus and only Lennon was making runs in behind

Think it's very unlikely we will make champions league next year
So for me martinez should play him all season in midfield with McCarthy/besic abd buy a class number 10 like he's talked about

Put it this way if we happened to get 25mil bids for barkley and McCarthy in the summer and had to sell one
It would be McCarthy every day for me

Your not by any chance one of his cousins

There's an article in the Echo saying Martinez sees his natural position deeper and as a number 8 like Ballack and that's where he will probably be played once a new number 10 arrives.

That would fit better with his apparent strengths, which IMHO include breaking forward from deep at pace with the ball at his feet. He's already a fairly strong lad and quite tall, he might get a little bigger yet and become a powerful box to box type. He will have to learn a bit more defensive discipline and improve his positioning, but then again are there ANY players out there who couldn't improve a bit?

Agree mate
Think he played that position for most of his youth/school boy football
He looks lost sometimes in the number 10 role

Definitely mate and there was someone on here last night who made a great point that he thinks it's tactics handed to him not to chase back and defend etc. I agreed with him because Barkley has mentioned about Martinez saying don't worry if you lose the ball and McGeady has mentioned he's been told not to track back. If you look up top we are awful at defending from the front. I think Barkley can definitely show more discipline to his game and would be more potent coming from deep as others have mentioned previously. It's up to Ross though to prove his worth to the team and nail down a position and absolutely work on it until he's perfected it. Someone mentioned Lampard yesterday, there's a player who Ross could learn a thing or two from. Great player and I think we can all agree we wouldn't mind having a Lampard type player on our hands for the next few years.

There's a lot of pressure on him mate and it's shown at times this season where he hasn't done things naturally. The biggest wind up is when he looks like he can't be arsed chasing down and harrying players for the ball ( something Rooney has always been superb at )but as mentioned in a post I've just done maybe that's his orders not to do that. A good rest in the summer and the coaching staff basically nailing a position for him to make his own what's needed. He's had a piss poor season and I think he would admit that himself but the season is done so we move on and we all get behind the lad and hopefully we see a confident and hungry player next season. An on form Ross Barkley full of confidence is a bloody beautiful sight.

Think back to the QPR game he and Besic looked great in a different role, what worries me is when RM has stated he still thinks Kone will make the grade with us - gulp!

I think Martinez seems to be a proponent of making all these young talents into 'complete players' - to varying degrees of success, if you think back to how Lukaku was employed against Arsenal vs. how he consistently tries him out as a 'target man' when his first touch etc. isn't really good enough. There's definitely something to be said for throwing the likes of Ross and Rom 'in the deep end' now, when there's so much ahead to look forward to from their untapped potential...

... but I think in the short-term Lukaku is a player who isn't benefiting much from being 'misused' in this way, especially throughout what has been a poor season, and Barkley even less so. Barkley in particular seems prone to dropping his head. Despite the moments of brilliance (remember also Rodwell's occasional moments? See performance vs. Man U), what I think he needs atm is to gain some confidence playing deeper - he is suffering too much confidence-wise, atm - and I think he needs a bit of help with that, seeing as he isn't the brightest spark.

Hopefully strengthening in the summer will give us more to work with in this respect... and obviously the team and results take precedence over any individual's development.

That, incidentally, is what I am waiting to see from Martinez; I am pro-Boberto but I hope he doesn't see the team as some kind of footballing experiment to illustrate what a maverick he is for his CV.
