Too many teams play very deep and concede possession to us, Barkley is not too good in that circumstance.

Problem is that we have a range of midfielders for the centre of the park so he's got hot competition to grab a spot there. He does have more attributes than most of them but he needs a run of form and soon.

Note to Martinez: he's defo not a winger. Hope you've noticed.

So Besic and Barkley have the ability to break down two sets of 4 by 4 camped around the edge of the box?

Swap Besic with Cleverly and you get the same question?

I think we need someone in the middle that can create something out of nothing. If Mirallas stays and Mertens comes I would play

That's not a bad team to break teams down but a lot of pressure would be on Deulofeu to perform just like last season it was Barkley. However I think Deulofeu is good enough.

Mertens would probably be the AM in that team, with Kev and Del on either wing.
 
the 'problem' i have with a winger being a playmaker is that it kinda makes the other winger irrelevant in terms of getting them in. lot easier to have a #10 behind the striker as they have the whole gamut to work with as opposed to being a winger only having the person behind the striker and the striker to work with.

I think it's more the opposite way about. I think most No10s have been converted into wingers when they aren't really suitable.

I mean how many wingers today get to the byline and put a cross in?

They're all looking to cut inside and shoot or play in the striker or the fullback on the other side who then cross.

I'm not saying Mertens is necessarily that or even Deulofeu but just that Deulofeu could be but you are right it's a huge risk since there's very little evidence supporting that idea.
