That's true, but our CM is very competitive and if he doesn't step up soon he will find himself on the bench.
....and that's exactly why Barkley was so important in the team shape because he is the only player we have who can receive the ball from those two and power forward in central positions. I wonder if next season RM might change things a little and free up one of the deeper lying CMs. Besic, Cleverley and Gibson (if he keeps fit) will all be pushing for starts. Nice problem to have, especially if RM also brings in a no10.

I dont think he was as poor as some make out, dont forget the majority of teams we played last season doubled up on him restricting him the space he had when he first broke into the team. This is someting new he will have to deal with and adapt his game to counter it. So last season not only was he still learning premiership football he also had to deal with opposition teams picking him as our danger man restricting him space and time on the ball.
Next season will determine if he has got it or he is another rodwell.

He can't be a Rodwell because he's got actual great footballing talent and he's shown this at the top level. He has more talent in his little finger than Rodwell has at all. Rodwell's great "potential" was fiction. He is a decent premier league midfielder who was over-hyped, whereas Barkley is a truly outstanding talent. They're very different.
He has "got it". He just needs to overcome his confidence issues and show it. He could learn a lot from a the Gerrards and Lampards of this world. They virtually maximised their possible returns on the talent they were given, in terms of performance, because they had a bit of mental toughness. I think Barkley's more talented than both but has amazingly fragile confidence.

Perhaps the constant groaning from our fans when he looses the ball hasnt helped him either. Big arm round him...lots of praise needed, You can tell in interviews he's not the most cocky / quick witted of personalities. Lets all promise to cut him some slack this season.
