Ross Barkley

The thought of Ross Barkley fulfilling his potential wearing an Everton shirt gives me the horn.

Ditto, Stones, Deulofeu, Lukaku, McCarthy, Garbutt, Coleman, Cleverley(?), Mirallas, Ledson etc.

As Kopitish as this sounds, with 4/5 quality buys, that team could "Potentially" achieve greatness.

Talent is not everything and it is not most important. It's talent+hard work+mentality combined that makes you a good at anything.

Of course talent is the most important thing. There's loads of players in the lower leagues who work hard and have a good mentality. Whilst they are good traits to have, without talent, they'll never play at the top level for long.

I disagree. Ask any coach at any sport. You can be successfull without talent if you work your ass off but you won't be successfull even if you have the biggest talent in the world it goes for nothing if you don't work/train hard enough and have the right mentality

You can't be successful in football at the top level without being talented.

I get your point, but without talent, you'll get nowhere near the top of the game.

That's why we paid £28 million for Lukaku and Stacqualursi is now playing god knows where. I'm not saying hard work and mentality are not important, but actually being good at footy is a little bit more important, you know?

OMG, the straq is actually a free agent!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some players have to work hard, some dont, I mean Beckham used to spend hours after training to hone his skills, but then so did Phil Neville.

Then theres somebody like Ronaldinho, he went to bed 1 night 1 of the best players in the world, the next day he was utter rubbish, cos he just gave up.

The question is where does "being good at footy" come from ? Is it like you just got born with it or does it come from your work, practise and training?

I don't think that let's say phil neville is a natural born talent but because of his hard work he was very succesful footballer at the end of the day

Being good at footy is a combination of lots of things. Phil Neville could have worked his arse off 24 hours a day, and he never would have made a striker. He had natural attributes that made him a good defensive player.

This idea that you can achieve anything in footy through hard work is nonsense. I've played footy with lads who try really hard, but they're still crap.

I have no reason to doubt Barkley's work ethic nor do I question his innate physical talents for football. What will define Barkley's ultimate standing is whether he has the 'top two inches' side to his football. At this stage, he has not revealed that 'attribute' but it's still early days.
John Stones on the other hand gives much greater hints of possessing it.
Regardless, at this stage of his career, I am going to cut Barkley a lot of slack. Superior 'man management' of his 'psychology/mentality' will be all important. I initially thought Martinez had such management skills in spades, but last season left me less convinced of this.
But as the dull boring ache of watching last season's Everton team pass sideways all game recedes, my optimism and hope for a successful (and entertaining) 2015/16 has returned and pursuant of such, I'm giving Bobby the benefit of the doubt that he can restore Everton's (and Barkley's)
fortunes.

Tbh not seen any suggestions that Ross doesn't work hard or have the right mentality.

Seen a few comments that he might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer off field but some of his best performaces have been in big games which is a far more important talent for a footballer.

My point was that being most skillfull and natural talented lad in the world doesn't mean that you end up being top top player. Bojan was once hailed as a future top top and is now at stoke doing a good job. Sevilla coach said that deulofeu was the most skillfull player he witnessed...at the training ground.

Fingers crossed that Barkley will make at least being our best player in the team once but i think it's 50/50.
