Ross Barkley

No, it's based on seeing him run the show when given a proper run out, against QPR on his debut at 17 for example.

I was at that game and he was completely outstanding. Then he gave away a penalty a few games later and that's pretty much the last we've seen of him.

I'm judging him on what I've seen of him, and he's an astonishing talent. Simple as.

He hasn't run the show against anybody ffs.

He was impressive against QPR, but 'astonishing talent' ? Deary me.

Some of the hyperbole regarding Barkley is cringe worthy.

Is that QPR who went nearly went down and we lost to that day then?

Michael Branch had a few good games once, so did Cadamarteri. Give him time, if hes good enough he will come through. There is no way Moyes or any manager would leave a player out if he thought he was good enough to contribute straight away.

Some people struggle to view things fairly.

I thought Oviedo was pretty poor tonight. I'm fairly sure that had it been Naismith giving a performance like that he'd be getting slated.

Loads seem to think Oviedo looks great. Based on what im not so sure. A couple of minutes here and there. he will probably be a good squad man, just like Naismith.

Even Jose Baxter had some good performances. I'm sure Barkley will be a name for us but people just need to be patient and not force it

Absolutely nothing has changed since then. He's the most gifted footballer to emerge at Everton since Rooney and all you need is a pair of eyes to see it.

Judging him from 10 minutes against the European champions in a misshapen side is stupid. He needs a proper run in the side and increasingly regular minutes to improve.

He's being massively mishandled in my view and it's definitely worth discussing.

I agree with this to a certain extent mate. I do think he needs more game time and tonight was a perfect opportunity, especially when we were cruising. However we don't know all that goes on behind closed doors.

I saw him live for the first time back when Arteta was still with us. Every time we got the ball, every one of our players were looking for Barkely to give him the ball, including Arteta. I watched him like a hawk that day. His touch and movement were exceptional and he still looks a real prospect, but again we aren't privy to everything that's going on.

Hopefully he gets his chance at the club soon, but the way things are going this season (with so much at stake) I don't think Moyes will risk him.

Sure we can play him in the group stages of the CL next season once we've qualified top of the group ;)

Mate you could go back into the vaults and probably find truckloads of posts from people declaring Rodwell to be Everton's central midfield lynchpin for the next decade. It happens with a lot of our young players ever since Rooney.

Another thing is to look at other clubs, City, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. How many of them are giving significant game time to 19 year old prospects ? Bearing in mind they generally have a stronger overall team to take up the slack than we do. Cleverley for example has only just come into United's team now, at the age of 23. Gibbs for Arsenal came into their squad around the age of 19, where Barkley is now.

Indeed, and the 17 year old debutant was by far and away the best player on the pitch on the day.

But he's "not ready" apparently.

Neville said: “Ross has been outstanding all pre-season and I think we all know we have got something special there. We just all want him to keep going out there and enjoying his football. He is such a great lad, he is always asking questions and he wants to learn.

“People say bravery is going round kicking people and getting stuck in. Bravery is taking the ball when you are under pressure, when you are 1-0 down at home and the crowd are on your back and he did that. His performance was the only real plus to come out of the game for us.â€￾

See the bold bit? That isn't happening, and that is utterly crucial for a footballer's development.

I'm cringing at the people trying to link criticism of Barkley's handling into some sort of moan about a 5-1 win. They are completely separate issues.

I think it's the fact Gueye and Hitz are getting the nod ahead of him that's prompting the questions.

Vellios will feel a tad aggrieved too no doubt.

If Barkley was good enough he would have played more by now. Moyes played Rodwell and Rooney from a young age. I don't think Barkley is ready and needs to go out on loan.

Hes learning his trade. He went to Wednesday and every one of his games were watched by our coaches.

From there to the first team and how he trains, there must be something hes missing.

Is he cultured enough and reliable to play, like say Rodwell was at his age? Or is he a bit of a wildcard who needs to have his hand held who may produce the spectacular but also isnt reliable enough?
