Says everything about the state of the current England team. Barely played for the U-21s, barely played for our first team, blasts one in against Norwich and suddenly he's in the main squad for a world cup qualifier. Where is the consistency of selection? Last summer Hodgson was picking Henderson for the Euros along with Parker. Then he had a look at Osman, Sterling got a go, now its Barkley, absolutely ridiculous. Meanwhile all the other top nations are in their final year of a four year plan for a world cup team. Nations like Spain have developed whole squads in their U-21s so whent he Xavis and Iniestas of this world move on they've got top talent like Mata, Isco and Thiago to replace them. These players are already established stars but have waited their turn for international chances. Our caps are given out like sweets to kids like Barkley and Sterling. Ridiculous.

Its an even worse indictment of the national side when you consider that, all of the above aside, Barkley probably is even after 2 games this season one of the best English midfielders. What a sorry state the national team is in at the moment.

Not quite sure he's ready to be playing in a World Cup qualifier squad.. made up for him though, he was excellent against Norwich and WBA.

I agree it's a bit out of the blue at this stage but personally, I genuinely think he's that good. Would rather give him a chance than overrated tripe like Cleverley who have proven very little.
