Ross Barkley

Imagine telling your son or grandson who's a massive blue that you chose to leave Everton for more money. How sickening would that be if he's looking at all your medals and wants to know why they have City or Chelsea on them rather than Everton. Barkley would be just a footnote in the history of Chelsea or United, he will never be adored as one of their own. He has the opportunity here to go down with any of the greats who have played for us.

Do you think it bothers Le Tissier that he never won any titles? He's revered as a god at Southampton and the entire footballing community respects him for staying. They all know how good a player he was, the same with Shearer at Newcastle. They are engraved upon the national conscience precisely because they didn't jump ship to one of the fashionable big clubs. There's a whole host of players with premier league and champions league medals who didn't deserve them, do they really make up for the adulationt hey could have received. Do you think Rooney never has a nagging voice in the back of his mind that thinks 'all this should have been at Everton'.

Of course it does. That's what footballers want to do.

I didn't want to say that but it is exactly the way I feel.

It is bizarre in my eyes that any Evertonian would say he would rather play at any other club even to win things over spending a whole career living his boyhood dream.

...I think this is a little romantic and naïve to be honest. Being a supporter and being a professional footballer are 2 different concepts. Your perception changes when you sign for a club and it is your job. Players can fall out with Managers or want a better deal, all of this type of detail gets in the way of romance. Rooney in particular quickly became a PLC and his progression to a world renowned club was inevitable. Players like him might still remain a supporter of the club whilst not being professionally linked.

I think Rooney will always have that pang of regret, then it will be tempered by the thoughts of 'well i would have stayed my entire career their had it been a side progressing, with investment, trying to improve etc), as far as players who where also massive fans of another club, you wont get a bigger fan than scholes was for Oldham, took his kids every game he could, brought them up as supporters of the latics etc, yet he was a professional player first and foremost, and tbh lids we can all say we'd have done it differently yadayadayada, the simple fact is its like many things in life, far far easier to take the morale high ground when you will NEVER EVER have to make the choice

For what its worth im like yeah id have stayed, no better feeling in the world, then i think about the money, the international accolades coming with a move, the trophies, medals, and international caps, the fact im getting talked about all over the world rather than in my home city and a occasional story in a paper (le tissier) and i realize that yeah id have made the same choice, just maybe a few years later, sadly i was the 5 a side version of paulo wanchope though so its all what if stuff lol

It just does not work like that at all.

I would love it to be that simple, but it's not.

We are fans, at some point these other fans, turn into Footballers that have a career, so like it or not, bieng a fan stops bieng part of it.

Ambition is ambition, which means Best that you can be, achieving greatness. Not JUST club great.

Yep.

Just as many Everton fans have to give up their season tickets and move away for work, footballers who get offered two or three times their current wage and the chance to move and win everything the game has to offer normally do the same.

Imagine walking out in CL final and lifting the prem trophy and 75k screaming your name. Im a big blue but money talks mate... If you got offered now 10k at Everton or 100k at united then you would go. Its the money mate which would make you

He'll be waiting a long time to walk out in a CL final or lift a PL trophy with Moyes in charge of United! (if he was to go there)

you say that now lad... thats what rooney probably said but when that money gets offered to you per week it would be really hard to turn down.

He'll be incredibly wealthy if he says at Everton for his career... okay maybe he'd earn more elsewhere, but how much is enough? Money isn't everything. Wouldn't it be fantastic if Ross bucked the trend of modern footballers and stayed at his home club.
