Ross Barkley may have broken a bone in his foot and will be assessed in the coming days, manager Roberto Martinez has revealed.

Barkley had been labelled a doubt in the build-up to Saturday's visit of Norwich City and duly sat out Everton's 2-0 win.

But Martinez confessed after the game that the problem his midfielder sustained in the FA Cup defeat of Queens Park Rangers is more serious than first thought and that the 20-year-old may now face 'a while' on the sidelines.

"Ross had a knock in his toe against Queens Park Rangers and we all felt that it would settle and he'd be able to play today," the Blues boss told evertontv. "As it turned out, I think it's a bit more serious than we expected and it could be a fracture in his metatarsal and we need to assess it in the next few days.

"We're going away to do some warm weather training and that's going to help Ross to heal his bone and hopefully he'll get back quicker than we expect.

"It is a blow but in the same way, at such a young age, we're going to use this as a perfect rest for him to come back and be as strong and as sharp as he can be in the second half of the season."

The very worst is that he misses WBA, Liverpool and Villa. He wouldn't have been involved against Stevenage anyway.

However, it doesn't appear to be a bad break, so I think there's a good chance he'll be back for the derby.

I think Martinez talking about Barkley being involved in training is very positive.

How can it be metatarsal though? Didn't they say it was his toe? Isn't the Metatarsal actually the middle of the foot?

If Bobby told me that the cranium was part of the toe I would throw away any previous misconceptions and just believe him.

A complete break is a fracture mate, break isn't a medical term. Fracture is the term and then you apply different words to describe the fracture. Open, closed, impacted etc.
