Ross Barkley

End of January. I'm hopeful of seeing him on the bench in the derby.

6 weeks and 3 days after injuring his hamstring, and he's a young lad.

Definitely need him back sooner rather than later if Barkley is going to be out for a while. Need someone to drive at defences

If he did that during the game and never came off with it (and factoring in differences of pain threshold and the likely effect of not registering the severity of injury until the foot cooled off and was at rest) it cant have been a massive trauma. He'd have been tested straight away if in real pain from a Rooney/Beckham type metatarsal injury and unable to carry on playing against QPR.

I tend to think from what I've seen from this manager - who is a trained physio, of course - that he errs on the side of caution and is well prepared to give players a lot of time out to recover from knocks that other managers might view as a niggle or a short term injury.

Either way, we are not Ross Barkley FC. We have a formidable team (boosted no doubt by arrivals) that no other team will want to come up against.

Is right davek. I'm thoroughly enjoying your optimism.

I too believe we can win there without Barkley but it's a massive blow.

just to add fuel to the fire on SSN they were showing highlights of the hearts/motherwell match and they said one of hearts players left on crutches and may have a broken metatarsal, now surely if Barkley had anything similar he would of been in more pain/had to have gone off with crutches?

did he get subbed off against QPR right after or did he stay on the pitch for a while/last the game?

Not necessarily it could be a hairline or small fracture which may not hurt as much but if he has, will probably mean a cast or crutches.

aye but the fact he had a late fitness test for Norwich surely suggests he hasn't needed crutches or a cast? although if it is a fracture he will probably need those but strange how this has gone down

If they initially thought it was just bruising, it couldn't have been a really bad fracture.

If it is, then Ross is the toughest lad alive.

I remember people saying as he went off he headed straight down the tunnel.

Also saw a number of people on twitter saying they saw him today at te game in a protective boot. No mention of crutches though.

that's what I mean, if he was given a late fitness test then surely it hasn't had him in too much pain or the physio's in much concern? which hopefully means if anything its only a small fracture

Seriously though how didn't we get wind of this last week? You'd think an injury like this would have been picked up by the press earlier in the week

its either a massive cock up by us not picking it up, or more likely its nothing too seriously (which I believe) if he broke his metatarsal 99% you know on the day like I mentioned before with the lad from hearts leaving the game on crutches I think it will be a small fracture to either the metatarsal or the toe which will probably mean 3-4 weeks out at most (hopefully)

This is correct.

The small bones of the foot are difficult due to their size.

Toe injuries are difficult due to level of swelling affecting a diagnosis recovery.
