Ross Barkley

Is it possible for a player to get criticised for one specific action without it being misinterpreted as a criticism of his whole game or career?
No, didn't think so.

He's a brilliant, I love the lad however I think his best position is playing as a centre midfielder, not behind a striker.

Leave that role to Mirallas, Ross's game is outstanding and he needs to be involved more.

Mirallas should never be a striker either, it's a complete waste letting him stand their relying on service and he hasn't got a clue how to run the line. He's our most potent threat, a bit of a poor mans Ronaldo, leave him in the space behind the striker and let him turn and run at defenders. He's good out wide but it's still a waste of his talent.

Whilst I'm going on, Naismith is quite clearly a striker. I've never been his biggest fan but he's surprised me how well he's doing and he's very intelligent in that role and is also quite competitive for his size in physical battles. He plays there or no where for me as he doesn't have a creative bone in his body to play in the 3 behind a striker.

The only conclusion I can draw from people having a serious go at Barkley is that they have never played footy much themselves. The lad has been injured since the QPR game and has come back without being fully fit on and off and people are saying he's been **** since about December? Well there's a shock. What do people expect?

Then again, these same people will probably have thought Jagielka's performance in the derby was because he's gone poor, when in fact he also wasn't at full fitness. It's not as if they are playing against top athletes themselves is it?

Barkley will be back to his best when he's had a few starts in a row. Anyone throwing a tantrum because he isn't playing at 100% at the moment is clueless.

Mirallas has shown his first touch and link play coming central isn't good enough. Definitely not one to be put in that position behind Lukaku for me. Both Ross and Pienaar can take possession in tight spaces, whilst being pressured, and lay it off or turn their man. We don't have other players that can do this, apart from Osman in his now very rare moments of form.

Things I've seen a lot in the last few pages of this thread: People being called names for writing off Barkley.

Things I haven't seen in the last few pages of this thread: People actually writing off Barkley.

We all need to stay fully behind Ross here

We can't all start turning on him after a few iffy performances

He's Ross Barkley. He's one of the best players we've ever produced. We need to support him through thick and thin

Seriously, we need to go on the assumption that he excretes candy floss and walks on water

This isn't me being sarcy as usual either

I've been thinking this every time I've opened the thread in the last couple of days.

He looked a bit off the pace the other day when he came on. It was a sloppy bit of play when he got caught out right at the end.

You can guarantee the manager will have taken/is taking care of that. That's part of his job and a thing he has quite the knack for.

Deary me, Blaming Ross for this?

He is the only player we have that will run with the ball and stretch defences centrally, but it seems people would prefer he done sideways passes like 95% of the other midfielders in the league and played it safe which is exactly the reason why we don't try anywhere near enough through balls as we should.

Forget it, lets swap him for Carrick, at-least we know he won't lose the ball. Absolute melts!

ehmm....Mirallas?

The idea of the role behind a striker is that you do get space, you can come deep looking for the ball and find space in thee hole.

Barkley has all the ability in the world and is perfectly suited to that role however I'd play him deeper where he can be more involved, it his natural position and I'm prepared to put up with the alleged defensive naivety as he'll learn further on the job. He's brilliant and the more he sees of the ball, the more of a threat we'll be whether that's from deep or in the final 3rd.

Piennar just doesn't hurt you, he's best out wide drifting in form the left making space for Baines although I agree he could do a job in the middle.

Mirallas is frightening, he'll pick the ball up, look you in the eye and then run at you, which is everything defenders hate. He commits defenders, pulls them out of position and has the pace to go past them unlike Piennar. He can also finish, unlike Piennar.

He plays there for Belgium and imo it's also the position we should use him.

my main point is that space or not Mirallas' first touch and passing is worse than Ross and Pienaars and for me that excludes him from that position really. I even understand Osman getting in there ahead of him. He has something in common with Osman in that his form is like a yoyo really. He plays mostly from the bench I think for Belgium, haven't seen him in the central role.

For me the jurys still out on Kev, Osman and Pienaar are on the downward slope of their careers and Ross is still green but brilliant.. I think we need this position filled in the summer. Somebody who can play across the three so that we have the option of playing Ross deep or in the hole.
