But he acknowledges that if Barkley outgrows the club they would be prey to Madrid and the rest of European football’s elite.
“And it would cost them a lot of money!” the Spaniard warned. “He is as good an English talent as we’ve seen, and that’s going to alert teams competing to win the Champions League, never mind the Premier League.
“He’s got the potential to achieve what Bale did.
“You’re talking about two to three years to fulfill that – that goal at Newcastle in midweek shows what he is. As well as the power, he has the control and the class.
“Once a player fulfills his potential and has done everything at a club, it’s not positive for anyone to keep him because he’s then not going to produce the kind of performance the team needs.”
