Ross Barkley

Think ya both reading way too much into that lads, for one English is not his native language so picking up each and every word will tie you in knots as their will always be something that can be misconstrued by a newspaper looking for any angle they can get to drive an agenda of a story they want to push - Barkley moving in this case.

Secondly, what he has basically said is Barkley is going nowhere next year, or another way to phrase it 'We aren't gonna be selling Barkley this season so stop printing stories we are going to'

Next summer he can just feed them another line about the next 12 months, such as we showed a further development this season to qualify for the CL, won the fa cup, uefa cup or or whatever, so obviously Ross will continue to grow with the team the next 12 months etc etc etc

Its just a clever way of palming the media off for the time being without tying himself down to something in 12, 24, 36 months time that can be used to hang him by some with should a stupid bid actually come in from a moneybags team
Could also be a hint to Kenwright - give me some money this window so we can push on next season or you'll end up in tears like you did with Rooney.

Could be a subtle hint about backing him this season m,ate, the one thing i am pretty sure of is Martinez doesn't tend to make many slips or reveal too much about what is gonna happen to the press like, he has a good control over the press emanating from himself

lets be honest RM always says "its good our players are getting interest as it shows we are doing well" in press conferences when they are linked to other teams.

as good as he is hes another man in football who sees's us as a stepping stone both for himself and the players (martinez refused to state his long term future at the club a few weeks back)

you ever want a manager who would say EFC is the place to be sod everywhere else get Big Nev his coaching badges as he's the only one who talks us up love the man

To be fair mate, I don't really think he can commit himself to the club long term. He doesn't know how ambitious the board will be. Looking at our past history, in terms of finances available for transfers, the club doesn't exactly come out smelling of roses.

Like all competitors he will want to win trophies and compete at the highest level in football. If the board can match that ambition and meet him half way by providing some decent funds then I think he'd stay long term. I think saying he sees us as a stepping stone is a bit harsh, everything that has come out of his mouth so far has been positive about the club, players and future he wants to build with us. It all depends on the board.

We have a gem of a manager in Martinez and we have some of the best young talent in Europe. This transfer window is going to be vital to how we shape our future.

We HAVE to sort out Barkley's contract urgently. If he doesn't sign one this summer and the season gets underway and he still hasn't signed, then that will be a big concern as he'll only have 12 months left on his contract next summer.

That will leave us vulnerable to bids nowhere near as high as his proper value.

I wonder if his agent has told him not to sign one until after the world cup? One or two good performances on the biggest stage in football, could see him in a very strong position when negotiating his new contract.

And earn his agent a bigger wedge to boot..

As much as I love Big Nev, he'd get us relegated.

You can't ask for more from a manager than Martinez has shown. He has no prior links to Everton, but has taken us to his heart.

Of course he'll be off if Barca come calling. I wouldn't begrudge him that, either.

So what you're saying is cause Wayne did it, every player will do it?
Of cos not... not so long ago there was this Steve Bull who follow his heart and stick to Wolves despite being courted by a few top clubs. He is still well-loved by fans nowadays but reflecting back.. his career is so so.
I think Wayne's heart is still at Everton.. look at his kids.. but his career has followed his head away.

Personally, i think its more him referring to the next 12 months being the biggest of Ross' career and is clearly pointing out that its best for him if he's at Everton for it.

The lad is going to the World Cup and could quite easily get himself on the Worldwide map, add to that it will be his second full season in the Premier League, with what we have seen this season, most would expect him to be even better. That's how i read it anyway.

I would add Duncan Ferguson too, plus he is in the setup now and doing a very good job. Not that I want to see Martinez go anywhere! but it is good to see people who are Everton through and through working directly with Roberto and the first team squad.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter if he says we'd never sell him ever or we'd flog him tomorrow for a fiver, what goes behind the scenes with player and club dictates if he's sold or not.
Not throwaway comments in the media where people lie and words get twisted all time .

I think it is obvious that we need to get him a birthday cake the size of Brendan Rogers' ego, send him numerous congratulatory tweets on our official Twitter, and instead of spending "Other Costs" on lawnmowers, hire a hitman for his agent.

Phew. Roberto has very quickly clarified his remarks in the Echo and said he plans for Barkley to stay "for the long term".

12 months was in reference to an important year in his development, or some Bobby speak like that.

False alarm, yeah?

There is no time-scale on Everton ’s desire to keep Ross Barkley insistsRoberto Martinez – who wants the gifted midfielder at Goodison for “the long-term.”

The Blues boss has no intention of considering allowing the World Cup-bound starlet to leave Goodison in 12 months time, despite some perceived ambiguity over comments to the press today.

Martinez was quoted in several national papers insisting the Toffees will not cash in on Barkley, 20, this summer whether or not he becomes a global super-star on the back of making an impact for England in Brazil.

But his assertion that "Everton is the perfect place for him for the next 12 months" has been interpreted in some quarters as an admission the Blues are already preparing to lose their latest home-grown sensation in a year.

Asked if he would consider a huge offer for the Wavertree-born talent this summer, the Everton manager is reported to have replied: “No. No, because it would be wrong for him. As manager you develop a relationship with players and you’re always honest with that.

“Ross is a phenomenal talent, probably the best English talent I have ever seen, but he is not the finished article yet and you need to be very careful. It’s our duty to protect him and I know Everton is the perfect place for him for the next 12 months.

“In football obviously you can never speak about the future. Obviously we need to come along and try to get into the top-four positions to offer players like Ross the next stage of their development. Ross is delighted at Everton and feels very much that he is in the right place at the right time of his career.”

However, if the reference to the next 12 months caused any disquiet among Everton supporters, Martinez told the ECHO it was unintended.

It was about Ross’ development and how the next 12 months are crucial," he said. "This is a vital period for him to fulfil his potential and the environment where he will be is everything. The only place is Everton.

“We want him for the long term but these 12 months are crucial.
