Let's not have a go at Roy for criticisng his players. It wasn't great to have singled him out, but FFS I hate the idea we have to spend all our time protection the big egos of players. Get over it.

Tactical decisions and selections there's plenty of problems I have with those.

Not too concerned about him pointing out that yes, Barkley lost it quite a bit when he was on the ball. He did alot right but the criticism wasn't misplaced.

He did give it a way a bit, but Wilshere was dreadful in support of him. He lost the ball so many times and is always running head first into the ground looking for a free-kick. Should have signalled out him over Barkley who was the only one to try and make things happen bar the Ox

Gerrard and Lampard have been hoofing it aimlessly for years for England. Terry and Ferdinand have defended atrociously for England as well. No one said annything then though. When its a young player who's not at a sky six club then they just wait for one mistake and big it up. The England national side is a joke and has been since Sven came in. Barkley will go the same way as Le Tissier abd Scholes- overlooked for some carthorse who will pass it backwards for the keeper to then launch.

That's what makes Barkley such an exciting talent though. Him picking it up, turning and running with the ball with pace and power, that's him game.

I sincerely hope those comments from Hodgson don't make him afraid to carry on doing that in games to come.

What the hell is wrong with these dinosaur managers? We've had Moyes and bloody Warnock criticizing the lad about certain aspects of his game, and now we have this blert choosing to pick up on a few negatives rather than praising a young footballer for the positive things he done!

This criticism baffles me. Yes Ross has weaknesses, main one being his decision making bit don't see why roy is making a big fuss of it, doesn't need to pick on his main weakness and use it to criticise him. Just like if he was to say wilshire's [Poor language removed].

only start before the world cup, he had to try and stand out and impress. others gave the ball away without even trying to go around people. he certainly did impress, if he was scared to get tackled he would never beat a man and be half the player and wouldn't be in the squad.

swings and roundabouts etc.

What did Hodgson say?

From what I saw I thought Ross done very well
Speaking to reporters after the 2-2 draw with Ecuador, Hodgson also said he would not address the 'obsession' to start the 20-year-old against Italy in Manaus.

Hodgson said: 'I thought Wayne Rooney played very, very well and I think Ross Barkley had some good moments. I think he needs to learn when he can turn with the ball and when he has to keep the ball.
But that's quite normal for a player his age. He'll be quite happy to have played so long on his first start.'

Asked whether Barkley would be among the starters against Italy, Hodgson then added: 'There always seems to be an enormous obsession with one player.

'I will be prepared to start any of the players in any game, but I'm not prepared to address your obsession with Ross Barkley.

'If he's going to be the player we want him to be, he has to make better decisions of when he turns with the ball.

That's not a criticism, but there were other performances out there today. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones were outstanding, as was Jack Wilshere in the middle of the park, while Rickie Lambert scored a magnificent goal.'

To be honest, most of the obsession over one player has been over Sterling, not Barkley, so I'm not quite sure where he's getting that idea from.

As a manager, you should be instilling confidence in the youngsters, not knocking it out of them by publically picking holes in his performance.

Man management at it's finest there Woy!

This is one area Martinez excels in. No doubt in my mind he would have publically praised him after that game.

Think he was just trying to keep the lads feet to the ground.
Not a very uplifting way to do it though.
Defo has him in mind to play more though and his ploy is to try to stop the media from overplaying his role in the squad.
He is still only 19 and like sterling has proven tonight with that uncalled for tackle,he has to be guided along the path he is on.
Fantastic debut and im sure woy knows it.
