Ross Barkley

Think Hodgson is just trying to take the pressure off Barkley to be honest.

Not so sure...if I were doing that with someone that I employ/manage IRL, I'd certainly not name them...I'd paint a picture describing that individual, but no way would I ever name them in a scenario where I wanted them to be not at the forefront Woy is doing it on purpose...and IMO it's not a good thing for Ross. Smells funny to me...in a not so funny way.

Gotta laugh at people so upset over the comments.

We all saw him play well. Why be bothered what other people think? Even the England manager.

And in all honesty what he said wasn't especially wrong. Barkley does need to work on getting the ball away quicker.

The problem is that he praised Rooney and Wilshire who did literally nothing.

Don't agree mate. Barkley, to be the player he is, HAS to be aloud to try his stuff regulary for it to pay off more often than not. Roberto lets him do it knowing it's not gonna pay off everytime.

Hodgson criticising for the times it doesn't pay off will make the lad try it less and lead to him being less affective.

You either accept it and play him for the outstanding attacking play his runs and turns provide for the team...or you play Rooney there to keep a slow boring England build up play style intact that's yields no results and hasn't done since 1990 when guess what?? Was the last time we had an exciting midfielder who could drive at and punish teams.

Roy is everything these young England players don't need!!

The fact of the matter is that an attack of Barkley, Ox, Sterling and Sturridge has all the potential to match any attacking force in world football. If England could put out a defensive unit who allowed those players to attack and do their thing, I can`t see why they couldn`t beat anyone.

ok fair enough, here is another media outlets player ratings. Again Barkley MOTM, with the likes of Wilshire, Jones and Lampard who were singled out by Hodgson for having a good game having ratings more like what they deserved, 5 or 6 at a push

I hope it's because Barkley knows he played well and is on form and that the other players need more encouragement due to playing badly otherwise I can't understand why he said it.

To be honest, most of the obsession over one player has been over Sterling, not Barkley, so I'm not quite sure where he's getting that idea from.

He said the same thing about a Rooney obsession yesterday. He's just another clueless old man who should have retired a long time ago.

He should have been sacked after the Italy game at the euros, that was the single worst England performance in my lifetime. Pure negativity from start to finish, not even a sniff of ambition.

More flesh on the bones here

This gets more annoying by the minute just what is he playing at?

I thought perhaps I was being biased because he's ours and that can always happen, but it seems ALL of the press and fans of other clubs are just as baffled.

Very strange. Perhaps Roy should have left Barkley at home and took Cleverly instead? A nothing player who will keep it safe and simple.

Or perhaps Ross should try harder to please his boss next time and just pop it off to the nearest England shirt next time and not try and make something happen!!

Conflicted

On one hand, I like the idea of an Everton player lighting the World Cup up and doing well, earning plaudits as consequence

On the other hand, I fear the idea of an Everton player lighting the World Cup up and doing well, earning plaudits as consequence

10 years ago. I mean, it would have happened eventually anyway, but that definately sped things up

Hodgeson showing his true colours there.

"Not prepared to answer your obsessions about Ross" translates to "I am an England manager and therefore I do not like star players which is why we'll never do as well as the Hispanic teams like Portugal with Ronaldo."

"Players who played better than Ross?... Phil Jones, Wilshire and Lambert" translates to "I honestly don't know anything about a good performance in football".

As others have said, whatever, don't play Ross. It's better that he stays fresh for some actually important matches next season instead of expending energy for the three defeats we're going to suffer in the group stages under a manger who doesn't appreciate him.

Sounds very blue tinted mate.

And as well as Ronaldo with Portugal?? They do pretty much the same if not worse than England.

Have you actually read what he said?

It's not entirely wrong in what he said either. It's that he criticised Barkley for something he does need to improve on. The problem is that he praised players that were utterly awful.

I read what he said and that's what I was quoting.

Portugal have Ronaldo as a star player. He's just one example. I'm not comparing Ross' abilities to him but rather him as the standout player who can make something happen. England (especially under Hodgeson) don't approve of players who stand out, but rather prefer a standard, boring XI. By the way, Portugal are ranked third in the world. They are a much, much better side than us and have been over the last decade at least.

Barkley does need to improve on decision making, yes, but Woy has gone about saying that the absolute wrong way. He could be worse at man management than Moyes and that's saying something. By completely bushing over the positives from his game (the fact that he was central to literally every attempt on goal for us) and instead saying that Phil Jones and Wilshere are better, it just further suggests that he will be picking his teams based on name rather than ability and that can't be a good feeling for anyone in that camp who's name isn't Gerrard, Wilshire or Rooney.
