Ross Barkley

Speaking to reporters after the 2-2 draw with Ecuador, Hodgson also said he would not address the 'obsession' to start the 20-year-old against Italy in Manaus.

Hodgson said: 'I thought Wayne Rooney played very, very well and I think Ross Barkley had some good moments. I think he needs to learn when he can turn with the ball and when he has to keep the ball.
But that's quite normal for a player his age. He'll be quite happy to have played so long on his first start.'

Asked whether Barkley would be among the starters against Italy, Hodgson then added: 'There always seems to be an enormous obsession with one player.

'I will be prepared to start any of the players in any game, but I'm not prepared to address your obsession with Ross Barkley.

'If he's going to be the player we want him to be, he has to make better decisions of when he turns with the ball.

That's not a criticism, but there were other performances out there today. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones were outstanding, as was Jack Wilshere in the middle of the park, while Rickie Lambert scored a magnificent goal.'

And here is the BBC ratings of the games, complete opposite to what Roy has said in his post match interview. These ratings are pretty much what every other England fan saw.

Wake up Roy and play the team that deserves to play, and the players that are not afraid to make a mistake. It may be a competition too early to make a real imapct but it will be a damn sight more exciting than playing for a bore draw and then getting done on penalties in the second round if we even make it out of the group.

Anyone see the ox walking around everywhere after the game on sky sports.

You think with all the medical help around he would have at least been put in a wheelchair or something.

Must have walked about 50 miles to get in that car .

Hope the lad pulls through.him and barkley were the best two on the pitch.

Woy is a disgrace to be honest, sitting there in the dug-out leaking sweat from his belly button onto his England garment the absolute Tyrannosaurus.

Cant believe what he has said to be honest, if he wasn't so arl I would go down there and flick his chin.

That's what makes Barkley such an exciting talent though. Him picking it up, turning and running with the ball with pace and power, that's him game.

I sincerely hope those comments from Hodgson don't make him afraid to carry on doing that in games to come.

What the hell is wrong with these dinosaur managers? We've had Moyes and bloody Warnock criticizing the lad about certain aspects of his game, and now we have this blert choosing to pick up on a few negatives rather than praising a young footballer for the positive things he done!
And you get fans agreeing with the dinosaurs, we hero worship rank average players and have a pop at truly talented players, this countries attitude towards football is a joke and that is why we are miles behind

Think Hodgson is just trying to take the pressure off Barkley to be honest.

Nah I think Roy is just proving the difference between a modern day manager like Roberto and a dinausoure manager like hodgson!

Where Roberto embraces such ability and style and accepts the downsides of such a player. Hodgson like (moyes) lOoks at the downside first, ignoring the fact that he's more game winner than game loser!

Wally! I have said it before and I'll say it again. England for the first time in a long time, have some very exciting young players but hodgson will NOT be the guy to use them to there full potential.

England last night looked great going forward! Problem was the defence! Hodgson doesn't know how to address that like our bobby does!

Terrific stuff from Barkley on Lambert's goal, who played quite well himself on the night...another good example that England should be spearheaded in attack by Ross

England could surprise

I just think Hodgson was trying to calm Barkley expectation. Probably overstated himself a bit in the process that's all.

You gotta admit the English media are obsessed with grooming the next English saviour and Barkley fits the mould all too perfectly.
