Ross Barkley

I would imagine Martinez is pretty peeved with what's going on. Hodgson mentions Barkley giving the ball away a few times against Ecuador, then the red tops bang on about it, then Barkley comes on against Honduras gives the ball away and Tyldesley jumps straight on to it. I wish they would leave the lad to strut his stuff without mentioning every little mistake. Give him the confidence to run at people and try stuff without being afraid that every little mistake will be pounced on by the 'experts'

It's doubly annoying because none of the other players come under the same scrutiny and seem to give the ball away without any comments
This.

He does a lot more than Lallana does, from what I've seen, although for some reason he seems untouchable by the media.

It is the first World Cup I've been excited about since about 1990 though, purely because of Ross. Lets hope he plays.

I don't understand how Managers like Moyes and Roy see Barkley losing the ball an issue, he bound to lose the ball as he that type of player. Is that what we're teaching our kids, always play the safe pass.

The hype seems to be around Raheem Sterling at the moment, who is for me a potential Shaun Wright-Phillips. A hell of a lot of talent, but whether he develops into a top player will become apparent in time. He came off the bench against Ecuador and during his brief stay on the pitch gave the ball away every time he touched it.

I'm hoping Roy is just dampening down expectation for Ross' sake as he can't deny the impact he has on the attacking intent. Personally I would play both instead of Lallana and Welbeck.

It's because sports writers and TV commentators and pundits are all thick, lazy arseholes whose opinions are worthless. Townsend claimed that Barkley's pass to Lambert, following his 40-yard run in the Ecuador game, was short. But the finish itself was "sublime", "wonderful", "a fizzer", etc., even though Barkley's run had sucked in four defenders and left Lambert unmarked in front of the posts.
That tells you just how incorrigibly stupid Townsend is.

Which is why I'm glad we have Martinez currently. You get the feeling with him that a lot of our youngsters are gonna have a much better chance with us now.

give me a foreign manager from spain or netherlands over the cautious british manager every day of the year. you just get the feeling british managers are constantly worrying about the negatives, "will he lose the ball", "what opposition player is going to hurt us" etc. you can see with what martinez says, he doesn't worry about those factors, ross is going to create many more chances for us than chances we'll lose if we he decided to not do the risky things.

this is where ferguson was totally different from your standard british coach. he was never scared to take gambles, he trusted youth all the time, gave them a chance to prove themselves and in pressure situations too. he never hesitated to take risks with gameplans, subs etc.

I heard a Kevin Sheedy interview on Irish radio on Friday, he was on plugging his new book. I couldn't believe how he responded to a question about Barkley's future, said he was likely to stay at Everton for another year before moving on to a big club or something to that effect. Did anybody else here this or were my ear's playing tricks on me.

Stubbs came out with something similar last year regarding Baines, both men should know better in my opinion, or are we the fans being deluded in thinking Barkley and Stones are here long-term.

no, you're perfectly right. we will accept they may well be gone one day if one of the world's best comes after them, but no way should we be thinking that within a year this will happen. i don't think barkley will be forcing a move after only 2 seasons as a first teamer with us - we're not that crap team down the bottom of the table anymore.
