Ross Barkley

But it also didn't work in games and while Uruguay and Italy, I agree, aren't the odds on favourite, unbeatable juggernauts they were made out to be when the draw was made, they are still top teams you can't afford to lose the ball cheaply against.

For Barkley to play, as far as I'm concerned, he needs to be in the central position behind the striker, which means displacing Rooney. It's a big risk and one Hodgson would be crucified for if it didn't work (regardless of how average Rooney's form is at the moment). He'd have to be 100% it was the right thing to do, and while Barkley's good and shows flashes of brilliance (which are getting more regular), he does have stinkers, he does have bad games too, too many arguably at the moment, to justify the risk.

I don't see why. A sitting midfield pairing of Gerrard and Henderson with three more attack minded players in front would allow both Rooney and Barkley to play.

I'm sure somebody said Barkley's pass completion was 96% against Ecuador, hardly the sign of somebody who gives the ball away loads.

I think Barkley giving the ball away comes more from when he runs with it and is tackled rather than misplaced passes.

No, just put round pegs in round holes. Put Rooney up front.

And I champion the idea of Rooney upfront, but given the season Sturridge has had, it's highly unlikely he'll be dropped unless he's atrocious in the first two games, in which case I see Barkley coming in anyway.

I'm conscious I'm looking anti-Barkley here. I'm not. I think he's an exciting player and I was fighting the cause of him playing on through regardless for us all season, even when he was dropping off in form. But I can understand, in an England team that's setting out not to lose their first two games, why he's a risk and why it's likely he won't play. And for that reason, I'm not slaughtering Hodgson for it.

You should slaughter anybody who sets out not to lose two games in a tournament competition against teams like Uruguay and Italy. Setting out not to lose is how you end up losing.

in the matches leading up to the world cup, barkley has played far better than rooney or sterling, in fact he has shown he is capable of doing things that the other two aren't. This obsession with experience does nothing but hold players and teams back, 28 year olds give the ball away, 28 year olds have bad games, but if a 20 year old does either its the end of the world, and personally I don't think Barkley does either more than the experienced lad, with the added bonus that he has more natural talent than any of them

I would imagine Martinez is pretty peeved with what's going on. Hodgson mentions Barkley giving the ball away a few times against Ecuador, then the red tops bang on about it, then Barkley comes on against Honduras gives the ball away and Tyldesley jumps straight on to it. I wish they would leave the lad to strut his stuff without mentioning every little mistake. Give him the confidence to run at people and try stuff without being afraid that every little mistake will be pounced on by the 'experts'

It's doubly annoying because none of the other players come under the same scrutiny and seem to give the ball away without any comments

the only player in the squad who finds space between the defence and midfield and is always available for the pass. must start.

Yeah, however I think Roy was talking more about him losing the ball when attempting to beat a man

Personally, I don't mind him doing that. With more game time he'll get better in his decision making and meanwhile he's one of the only players who looks capable of causing panic in opposing defences.
