Ross Barkley

Thought it was weird having rooney on the left of midfield...surely a better option to play ross?

Would have started him myself, hope he gets a game from the start next.

...presume you mean Ross would be a better option out wide than Rooney. Not for me. Certainly not at this stage. Ross needs to be given free licence and I don't think that would be the case out wide. Sterling out wide and Rooney in the hole would've provided better balance.

They did that last night and it juat allowed the Italians to team up on sterling and keep him quiet and rooney was still crap.

The whole team is put off balance trying to shoe horn a player that really has no business being in the starting line up. Rooney should be benched let the young hungry players have a chance to show what they can do.

Rooney has failed to preform at every international competition since 2004 and it has cost us persisting with him. Maybe letting him know he can't just walk into the team unless he starts preforming will get the best out of him.

But Ross looked good and I hope he has proved he deserves a chance to be trusted with a start but I doubt it with Roy at the helm.

There are some seriously good ball players in that squad, including Ross, but all they are allowed to do is pass it back to Gerrard so he can punt it to Sterling or Sturridge.

Last night you had 2 holding midfielders and they still didn't cover the space in front of the back 4. The problem is the assignments or the players, not the formation.

this all day long, got nowhere near the wings either, which is an important job for the two holding players in that system, wellbeck and rooney are pretty much forwards, the two holding midfielders have to be aware of that area

That was the problem on the left which left Baines so exposed, no Barry dropping in in front, he should be playing over Gerrard, Gerrard was a good player but these days he's a former AM / box to box player who's legs have gone and is now trying to convert to do the job Barry has done most of his career. Barry is no quicker but has always had no pace so has adapted his game and role accordingly.

....don't really disagree with the Rooney sentiment. He's definitely not a schu-in these days. I think, though, that putting Barkley out wide would not solve that problem. In hindsight, had Milner played left side we'd probably have got something from the Italy game. Hopefully Oxlade-Chamberlain will be fit for the next game to provide a proper fix.

Spot on, its a farce

If Rooney plays he needs to play either as a 10 or 9. Think it's a bit unfair sticking him out wide and expecting the best out of him. Problem with Rooney (for England) is that there's arguably better options at the moment in
Barkley and Sturridge and maybe even sterling (although I'm not convinced he's a no.10).

I really hope Gerrard calls it a day after the WC. Funny how names and reputation get you along way in football. Gerrard in this England formation is no where near as good at that role than Barry, yet he was completely ignored.

Rooney needed to play the other night centrally between Sturridge and the midfield.

When defending he should have then dropped into midfield and push one of the other midfielders out to help Baines sort out their right back and right sided midfielder.

Another thing that would have helped would have been to put Sterling on the left side of the attack so that right back couldnt have ran forward when he wanted to.
