Ross Barkley

He's had a tough couple of matches. Don't know why that's being disputed. I don't see why he's immune to being dropped for a game. Wouldn't mind seeing Del or Kev in that space. Considering Ross never attempts to make a tackle we wouldn't lose anything defensively and it might wake him up a bit to sit for 60 minutes.

Roberto Martinez has accused Roy Hodgson of not getting the best out of Ross Barkley, and believes the England manager should be using him better.

The Everton boss believes Hodgson's style of play is not conducive to seeing the midfielder in full flow - “he is not special” - with the Catalan hailing the 21-year-old as “the best in the business” in transition. Hodgson has adopted a possession-based philosophy since taking charge of the Three Lions, but Martinez is under no illusions how England should play.

What's more, it should revolve around Barkley, he says – and if it doesn't, he won't contribute as much as he could do. “It’s quite simple,” explained Martinez. “People will look at what Ross does defensively, but I look at what he can do offensively against these sorts of teams. “These international teams when they lose the ball, there is space, but you need pace and power to break into that space. Ross gives you that. “Those four seconds as soon as you win the ball, who can affect the game then in transition? He is the best in the business. "But if England don’t want to play like that, if they just want to wait and get set and have the ball, Ross is not special. “We have got to that point where Ross Barkley knows how special he is and what he does. “Depending on how they want to use him, he will be influential or not for England.”

Barkley, who has two goals in 17 appearances for England, has been in magnificent form for the Blues this season. That has been largely founded on his work on the counter attack, picking the ball from deep and putting his side on the front foot immediately. Barkley is one of a number of young players with that sort of style, with the likes of Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also strong in transition. Ahead of England's friendly with Spain this week, Martinez has called upon Hodgson to use the resources he has to the best of their abilities.

“If you look at Spain – and it is one of those teams you want to be tested against – you cannot play the same way as when you are the team that is going to have the ball a lot,” he added. “It is very different when you face a team who you know are going to have more of the ball. “That doesn’t mean you haven’t got a strong performance or strong say in the game. “It is different when you have a group of players to choose from like England – they can set the team up the way they want. You don’t need to have possession in order to be effective in the game, as long as you have the right players.”

Even with Barkley not being on top form (and as a young player he will have blips) he still gives the opposition a lot to worry about, they cant just double mark him as they have to also worry about Lukaku and Deulofeu...

I think he lacks another ball player which could be Cleverley.

Ross has been a bit iffy since coming back from the last international break, i thought he was Englands best player over the 2 games

I just do not like Hodgsons involvement with him. HE DOES NOT LIKE ROSS BARKLEY.

Just like David Moyes would love a team of Kevin Kilbanes - Hodgson would love a team of James Milners.

I think Ross will know that "nice guy" Roy does not like him and I think Hodgson is trying to take any flair out of Barkley. Barkley needs a Venables/Bobby Robson England manager.

Some of you lot are pure wipes if you wanna drop ross for not playing well in a game or 2!

He is going to play like that a fair amount, then BANG something happens. This cant happen if he is stuck on the bench!

Same with Geri, if he has a bad half you are all whining, but attacking players can get targeted and marked tightly.
As long as we exploit the space elsewhere so the opposition cant rely on marking certain players tight we are in business!

Couple of quotes from a west ham forum :

"Won't be long before the CL teams come after Barkley either.
Thought he was superb yesterday, always on the move , always available."

"Barkley has it all , heart was in my mouth every time he was on the ball, very gazzaesque"

"Personally, having seen him for that lot a few times now, Barkley is the sort of player I'd be building England plans around, rather than default underachieving Arsenal crocks"

"I thought Stones and Barkley were excellent for them, Barkley in particular was involved in everything."

My favourite post on here for a long time!

Just sit back and enjoy the lad!

Doesn't like him, yet has had him in every squad even when his form has been utterly dreadful.

He really hasn't - he was outstanding against Sunderland, absolutely top drawer. Apparently because he didn't belt one into the top corner some people think he wasn't!

Too many on here jumped on the "poor decision making" band wagon if a pass goes astray. Never seen it applied to anybody else who contrives to lose the ball. People should go and watch the lad rather than listening to Sky pundits.

You should check out Naismith's thread.

I found this super interesting because it basically confirms Martinez's greater interest in the counterattack which we've seen be devastating for us this season.
IMO we're one of the best counter attacking teams in the league, it's just when we're looking to break down 10 men behind the ball that we're out of ideas.
