Stats don't show how well you control a football, your reading of the game, your timing of a pass, your range of passing, your game management, the way you can dictate the tempo of a game.

Arteta was streets ahead in all these aspects.

All true, agreed with this. But it works for both players, Ross has a great touch, stonger than Mikel and beats a man better.

Ross needs a Mikel with him.

I think the only valid comparator between Barkley and Arteta is that almost everyone was chocker when he left us, whatever the % split is, that is not the case with Barkley. i dont think Arteta was overrated, he was a very good player, as was Pienaar, as is Barkley, none of them are or ever will be worldclass.

He had three very good seasons, followed by earning the nickname of 'The Crab' for a reason.

He's probably a bit overrated if we're being honest, but still a very good player for us.

Arteta will always be remembered as being one of our best ever midfielders, Ross won't mate.

We were incredibly lucky to have Arteta and his missus was stunning too

If anything, comparing Arteta to Barkley should be a reminder of just how ridiculous the criticism of Barkley is given he's nowhere near approaching his peak.

Wasn't arteta branded as "arteta the crab" for a good couple of seasons on here? You couldn't make this stuff up.

I'll be chuffed if Barkley has signed a new deal, he's undoubtedly one of the better young attacking players in the prem and has improved this season over last season. He's got a long long way to go to realise his potential but that's to do with the amount of talent and physical attributes he has. Put some better players around him, give him some genuine competition for his place and see how he gets on.

Arteta's feet were as Velcro like as Fellaini's chest, the lad was ace. I also like Barkley a lot, and hope his decision making and confidence to hit a ball from range again, comes good in time.

Both quality players but currently Arteta>Barkley by a mile... But Barkley can improve plenty.

Ross is better than Arteta was for us.

Not at all.

Arteta was the most gifted midfield player we have had since Kanchelskis. Barkley doesn't come close to him in terms of performances given in an Everton shirt. I would say that Barkley has as much talent as him and certain aspects of his game are better than Arteta's but Barkley is mentally slower and doesn't apply his talent enough unfortunately.
