You're probably right, but there is a distaste in many on the fanbases mouths (we're an echo chamber, but as far away as I am, GOT is my window into the fan's thoughts) right now. 6 months ago there were many that said he wasn't good enough, but few saying we should sell him or calling him a traitor or acting like he is some sort of villain.
Now that Koeman has put this out publicly, repeatedly, for weeks, there is a lot more general discontent with Barkley. People acting like he should be happy to sign whatever the club puts in front of him just because he's an Evertonian. That mentality is ridiculous, and is being fostered by the public pronouncements of his boss.
How would any of you like your contract negotiations with a company to occur under constant media spotlight? Even then it's a bad analogy, because Ross has fans that have expectations of him loving the club. But loving a company shouldn't cause you to make bad life choices or stupid financial decisions, and if he feels he's being offered under market value he has every right to negotiate for a deal he believes is better. Not doing that isn't being a bad blue, it's being a professional.
I know the money at stake seems utterly obscene, but does anyone think Ross has huge earning potential post-football? He doesn't have any media presence, so pundit is out...where will his money come from after his career? He has to see this as his chance to take care of himself and his family for life. He has maybe 10 years to make all that money, and he knows better than most that it can be cut short at any time.
No one is privy to the inner workings of the deal. Koeman putting public pressure on him based on his childhood loyalties is f'ed up and only likely to cause problems.
As I said, I'd have trouble signing a deal after all this simply out of principle.
