Everton are set for further talks over Ross Barkley and want a decision on his future this week.

Ronald Koeman - who has constantly affirmed that the 23-year-old will be sold if he does not pen a new deal - was due to have discussed the situation with the club’s board on Monday.

The Toffees want a quick resolution to the saga so they are able to turn their attentions towards signing a replacement should Barkley depart.

Sportsmail revealed last week that Everton will look to command £50million for the midfielder if he leaves, with Tottenham and Arsenal keeping an eye on developments.

Barkley, going into the final year of his current contract, was given a deadline of the end of the season to make a decision by Koeman.

Surely to be an England midfielder he has to actually play for England. Does anyone still call Crouch an England striker?

Everton's Ross Barkley looks set for summer transfer after letting new-contract deadline pass

Spurs and Manchester United are watching developments with star Goodison chiefs wanted an answer from on Monday.

Ross Barkley is ready to leave Everton after failing to meet the club’s deadline for clarifying his future.

It is the biggest clue yet that England international Barkley will refuse to sign a new contract, and effectively signal the end of his Blues career.

Chairman Bill Kenwright has led a concerted effort over the past year to keep the local-born midfielder at the club, because he is desperate to retain a strong connection between the fans and the club, despite plans to take Everton to the next level with some serious summer investment.

There is a £100,000-a-week offer on the table - the biggest deal in club history - but although manager Ronald Koeman indicated after the final game of the season on Sunday the club would make a statement within 24 hours, that has not happened.

Barkley was given a Monday deadline by Koeman, but there has been no commitment either way from the player’s representatives.

Instead, it is likely Barkley will be given until later in the week to make a final decision on whether to accept the offered terms.

It seems, though, that by delaying his decision once more, the 23-year-old is contemplating turning his back on the £5million-a-year deal.

Tottenham and Manchester United are both monitoring the situation, and could be persuaded to bid £20m for a player with one year left on his current contract.

If he says he will not sign, then Everton will seriously attempt to sell the player, with Koeman already indicating he will sign “players in Barkley’s position, wether he stays or goes, because we need more productivity in that area”.

Koeman has been linked with a move for Ajax skipper Davy Klaassen, who plays the same position as Barkley and has scored 22 goals already this season to help the Amsterdam side into Wednesday's Europa League final against Manchester United.

There is also strong interest in Swansea attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson — the Blues are ready to rival Spurs in the race for the Iceland international after a stellar season for the Welshmen.

When all this came to a head weeks ago, i was like no problem, Ross will get it signed. I'm now of the opinion that i want him gone ! If he was 100% behind the club and our exciting future he'd of signed on the dotted long ago.The longer it's gone on the smell of everything around this has increased.

Neither of those written by the reporters who get actual club news for those papers.

File under nonesense.

Uh, yeah. Signing the next contract isn't terms of his contract. Getting your head down and doing your job as outlined in your contract is the very definition of professional. It's not Ross's responsibility to make sure the club can make money off of him - it's the club's responsibility.

Would they have invested so much if it did not benefit the club to do so? Is that investment coming good dependent on him signing this contract? Is that Ross's responsibility? Is it his job to ensure the club get good value for him?

You seem to be expecting him to generously do Elstone/Kenwright's job of ensuring that we do not make bad investments.

Also - Fahrad Moshiri is a billionaire. It's his money. Are you seriously questioning the morals here? Poor Moshiri getting screwed out of some money because his people made bad deals and a 23 year old kid didn't bail them out.

That's fine. I disagree. Ross's responsibility is to the terms of his contract and himself. Any loyalty to the club is bonus, and something to be lauded, but I don't blame him for not going above and beyond the terms of the contract he signed.
Bad deals....bailing them out...expecting him to do Elsrones/Kenwright job of ensuring we don't make bad investments? What are you really saying as very little of that makes much sense. You do however accept that Moshiri (for which I read Everton) are "getting screwed". I'm not sure why there's any confusion over the situation. The lad either wants to play for Everton or he doesn't. The Club have offered him a very good contract which he and his agent are reluctant to sign. Fair do'S if he doesn't want to sign it but don't then be surprised that the Club are pressing for an answer so they can officially put him on the transfer list....despite them wanting him to stay.

The reverse can be argued: he doesn't know how to get in the mind of average-to-good players and cant understand why they cant make a key pass/interception

So, he's in good company with the Everton managers for the last 21 years then.
