Ross Barkley

it's the managers team though Joe. He's said Ross has been offered a good contract - one that i'm sure they feel reflects his worth to the squad. Ross is the one not signing it, not saying anything, hedging his bets maybe and making it difficult for Koeman to plan for the upcoming season and beyond so i think it's understandable for the manager to be frustrated with the situation. Maybe calling him out at the end of the season with a deadline was the wrong tactic but still i can understand why he did it. I'm sure there is more to this than simply money or one not liking the other but at some point Ross has to grow a pair and either sign or publically turn it down so the club knows where we are.
I still hope - regardless of whether Sigurdsson comes in or anyone else that he stays because he's a good player and blue and you want that heading into an exciting new era

This. Good post

Ross is a homegrown player, and i think he has his heart in Everton.

The same can not be said about Koeman, Morishi, walsh, etc, who is on a paycheck, and will only be here for soo long.

Let's treat our own, with some dignity and respect.
Sure it is a hardcore business, but Ross should be special to us.
Its a 2 way street, this. Ross has been offered a deal and hasn't signed it, is down to his last year of his (very well paid) contract at his boyhood club. People would pay a week of his wages to play 1 match of their club of their dreams.

it didn't backfire in the sense he improved after Christmas, though.

And the thing is, he wasn't singled out for criticism at all. There was a huge deal made of it as Koeman was pretty blunt. He needed to be more productive etc. But Koeman always qualified that by saying so did all the other attackers.

Did McCarthy get singled out for criticism as well, then?

It didn't backfire in the sense that his performances improved, I agree, but look where we are now. In the grand scheme of things, and I speculate here, criticism has made Barkley feel he has no future at Goodison under Koeman.
I can see what Koeman was trying to do, we have a saying in Northern Ireland, Koeman was trying to "up it up to" Barkley.
But, we are where we are, we can't keep him on the contract he presently has and we can't get the money we want for him. I suggest we get Arlene Foster, Jeffrey Donaldson and Nigel Dodds in to negotiate on our behalf and he will probably sign for less money than he is on now and Northern Ireland will get another new hospital.
On the McCarthy point, I remember all the stick about him playing for Ireland when he was injuries but I don't remember him getting the same criticism as Barkley. That is just my recollection, I don't have total recall of all Koeman's statements.

The manager has a job to do and that is to win matches.
Sometimes when it involves your own club fans emotions cloud their better judgement especially when it comes to a home grown player.

We have seen at Utd how Mourinho and Feruguson before him can cut out a player that doesn't fit into his plan. It is similar at Everton at the moment.

Ronald Koeman is firmly in charge , I think he is stronger now than David Moyes was at any time during his stay here and that is saying quite a bit. Players will come and go and the manager, as with all managers, will be judged on results.

I still think Ross may sign a contract, I hope he does, but the important players at Everton this season are Baines, Williams, Keane, Schneiderlin, Gueye, Klaasen, Rooney, Sandro, Coleman when he gets back but maybe not Ross Barkley at the moment.

Should sign the contract then the absolute melt

You didn't mention Pickford who is going to be really important for us.

Barkley is a good player but is not World Class as he and his agent feels :-( He wanted to be the "star" of the team but before it was Lukaku and now its Rooney as the "star" man! His going to end up as the next Hibbert or Osman , a player who divides the fan base as he feels as his a local lad he deserves no criticism :-( Young Davis has already took the potential superstar status off him and excuses of Koeman being tough on him etc are cowardly excuses by others to defend him :-( His not a kid so he needs to man up, get his head sorted out and decide if he wants to play for his boyhood club ! Otherwise he should take a long walk off a short plank and get the hell out of the club as we need strong minded ambitious players who are willing to sacrifice themselves for Everton :-) Lukaku did'nt want to so left and if barkley has same attitude he can go too and we've already better options on the books now anyway :-)

This is all heading towards a lowball offer from Daniel Levy on deadline day.

That's basically it

Everton clearly want a decent fee, not many clubs believe he is worth it, and know that come deadline day they will be able to offer a low fee and no doubt get him as we will be desperate to sell.

I would be happy with that, as its not like we are going to get a hi end offer from anyone else. We wont need him at the start of the season anyway and Spurs will miss a few games when they could of had an option on the bench for a few extra million, obviously they cant go too low or we will just hang back until Jan. Anything that tops 25m is good under the circumstances

I just cannot see him getting into that Spurs squad, both because of talent and the way they play. They make Koeman's desire to play a high press look like a 5-5-0
