Ross Barkley

I genuinely think he just doesn't know/ has forgotten his role on the pitch.

Martinez had no game plan, when the ball went forward up to barkley etc there was no structure - like relying on a moment of brilliance from one of our attackers.

Hopefully koeman gets him playing togger like he's good at

One thing that struck me last night watching Germany was how hard muller works to get the ball back it largely goes unnoticed.

There is no doubt in my mind that barkley is capable of matching that effort & intensity off the ball he just needs to have it coached into him, rather than being encouraged to not engage with defensive duties in order to be fresh & ready to break in the "transition" load of rubbish he needs to get involved as much as possible in whatever capacity be it recovering possession or attacking.

Haven't seen anything at this tournament that compares to him on his day.

It is partly Martinez fault but Hodgson is as much to blame as he's a coward. England best performance of the last 5-6 years was in the friendly against France. Ross played in central midfield with Dier and Alli. That midfield was young, very well balanced and each player had a role that suited them.

All doesn't look right in the 10 and needs to be deeper. Rooney played from a wide position that night and played very well. Hodgson couldn't keep him there though as he has to accommodate Sterling and to a lesser degree Lallana (neither of them played that night).

I don't mind a manager having loyalty but Hodgson is inconsistent in how he applies it and often chooses the wrong games/players to be loyal too. Rather than looking at the France game, he will use a last minute win against Wales and a draw against Russia as evidence of a winning side.

I feel sorry for Ross. Redknapp was right when he said he'd build his team around him. I am not slating Rooney who's played well this tournament (and I'd have picked him) because had Rooney not played Hodgson would have shoe horned Wiltshire or Milner in there.

He is a truly awful manager and it's got to the point with the way he treats Everton players I hope England lose every game.

Some nonsense here tbh. I think we should have taken more natural wide players given that Sterling has been poor for a while. However, Ross has played for Hodgson as much as any other player for the last 2 years, (he also played in every game at the World Cup) but finds himself out of the team because Alli has overtaken him in the pecking order after having a better season (especially second half of it). Simple as that.
Stones, selected as third choice central defender seems fair enough, Smalling is a year or two ahead in his development and Cahill is a safer option.

Why on earth should England 'build their team' around Barkley? A player who is at best an inconsistent performer in a mid table outfit.

I actually see Ross more as a Kroos type than a Muller.

Gonna try and give him a clean slate for next season. Frankly if it wasn't for the hype he had goten I would be pretty happy with his developement right now.

At the moment absolutely true

Exactly. I'm first to praise the potential of Ross, but for whatever reason his application in the second half of the season didn't warrant a start.

Some may blame Ross himself while others may looking to blame Martinez and our style of play; either way he's not really shone as of late.

As I said, he was the potential to be a wonderful player which I hope the new manager may help achieve, yet he may equally simply a 'good' one.

Far too often people look at it as either he is either great or poor. Really, without the blue glasses, I think he's currently somewhere in between.

Would he get into many of the PL sides? Yes. Would he arguably currently warrant a spot in the top sides? Personally no.

Potential can only last so long, He has to really show what he can do this season. I agree that he under Martinez he probably didn't really know his job, he played central players on the left and tried to mix it around a bit. The thing I noticed more than anything last season with barkley was how first half he would go on bursting runs, and by 60 mins they'd been swapped for needless passing around and stupid 5 metre one-two's. Whether that was playing safe i don't know, but personally I think it was a fitness issue. I noticed exactly the same thing for England, and it wasn't as if he was making runs all game, like some midfielders do. I think a good pre-season of fitness and being given a more permanent role may be the making of him. If not we always have the backup of the other lad with potential. Cleverley, thinks people said he's had potential for a good 5 years.

Did you watch the two England games?

To be honest mate i think he knows exactly what he is meant to be doing.

The problem was he had no fitness coach and pretty much had his manager piling all the pressure and reponsability onto him without giving him any restbite when he clearly needed time away from the first team. Ross with a fitness coach will be a far different prospect, and i have said a few times in other threads signing a replacement is key as well. It shouldn't be ross or nobody, it should be ross OR someone, take the reponsability away from him.

Guarantee the minute he stops being forced to play every minute in such an important role, and given more time and more chance to enjoy his game that you would get him kicking on. Especially if his replacement is the one in form whilst he is taking time out.

Ross has got everything in his game to make him a star for us and a key member of the team, but he needs to develop at a regular pace, he needs time away, needs to learn the role and he needs competition for his place.

Was he played every game at the world cup? I don't remember him starting many but could be wrong.

Hodgson is a coward and I tell you why. At the turn of the year it was Barkley and Alli to play. Both performed very well in a midfield together and produced one of England best displays in years together against France. This "Alli V Barkley" rhetoric never existed. They are different players, offer different things and had performed well together.

Aspects of the media, started by that rat Carragher then introduced the discourse of Alli V Barkley. I remember him doing it and the Ingerland media bandwagon jumped on it. The sort of knuckle dragging, kopite buffoon that is the social base of England fans jumped on the bandwagon and operation attack Barkley commenced.

I would ask though, on what planet has Alli "overtaken Barkley". BY scoring less goals and having less assists in a better team last year? By scoring similar goals to what Ross has for England. To producing similar performances to Barkley while in an England shirt? By looking unconvincing in Barkley's role as a number 10? If one had to play, then it should have been Barkley without question. The largely southern fan base of Ingerland, and it's 4th estate media would disagree as they worship Spurs and their players. However the facts would indicate Barkley had a better season, was the man in position and had done little to deserve to be dropped.

I am not knocking Alli by the way. I have stated both should be playing. Hodgson is a coward though who is too scared to do the decent thing and play England most creative midfield player.

As for why England should build a team around Barkley? In truth because even half fit he can do things none of our other midfielders can. He can beat players for run, shoot from distance assist in the final third, break from deep and control play from central areas. In essence he has shown he has the ability to run the midfield. All of our midfielders have some of those attributes. None have the ability to run a game in the way he does, with the possible exception of Rooney who gets close.

There are drawbacks to Barkley. He can lose the ball cheaply and at times his defensive work rate isn't great. Top managers would see the positives of what he brings. I'm not saying he should walk into Barcelona. However when you look at that England team he should be one of the first names, as when he's playing well we don't have many players like him.

Hodgson is like Moyes though, he sees negatives in players and when you do that you end up with the least worst option, not always the best option. That's what a midfield of Alli, Lallana & Sterling is. The least worst options.

World class talent, not even a shadow of doubt in my mind. Hes never been coached or managed properly, im looking forward to watching his development next season, he is going to break out in a big way via i think he will be getting a dutch Loafer out of his backside for much of the early season.
