IF the reports are true that the club didn't offer him a new contract until the backend of last season then they're massively at fault for this situation.

Allowing a homegrown £50m asset to potentially walk away for nothing is negligence of the very highest order.

Regardless of when the contract was offered it was offered and he flat out rejected. The club hasn't done anything wrong.

Nah, come on. They should have offered the contract 12 months earlier and sold last summer to protect a valuable asset for the business.

The club takes the blame for devaluing an asset through mismanagement.

Totally disagree. If a 5 year contract was offered 12 months earlier, then I very much doubt he uses the stalling tactic which he has been clearly applying over the last few months.

Would we risk an asset like Lukaku going into his final year? Not a chance. But we did with Ross and its massively backfired.

Left ourselves wide open for this.

Coulda Shoulda Woulda territory that though.

That said, probably right mind.

How on Earth could we have known what he'd have done back then? You can't just stroke hindsight to fit.

I don't think you're quite getting this... the fact we didn't offer him one is the mistake. Whether he'd have signed or refused, we'd either have a player on a new five year contract or we'd have been able to sell on for maximum value with two years left on his contract.

Exactly this.

There's utterly no reason why we should have sold him last season. And there was no issue whatsoever with a new manager taking a while looking at his players close up before dishing out bumper new contracts. This is purely hindsight you're talking in mate. He's shafted us over and that's why Koeman was speaking like he did. He knew what was coming. He smelt a rat. And he was right. And he dealt with it accordingly.

You're basically saying that we have to have players resign 5 year contracts every 2 years then?

As we offer contacts to players with 3 years left, give them 12 months to sign and then sell with 2 years left? Whereas Ross was just 12 months further down the line than this proposed timetable.

Doesn't seem right.

Sell for maximum value to who though? Spurs have seemingly shown their hand - they don't want to bid big on him and never have. Chelsea have known about his status for ages - but a deadline day bid was a 'last minute' decision. City or Utd? Doubt it.

He's the one in the driving seat here and has been since the Summer of 2016 if you ask me. Stones leaves, Lukaku is whinging to the Belgian press and in comes a ruthless Ronald Koeman.
