2017/18 Ross Barkley

the goal against Newcastle represents Barkley at both his best and worst.

he of course showed great strength and composure, but there were probably at least four moments during the run where it made much more sense for him to have passed. and it never occurred to him even to look.

true, on that one occasion, the end justified the means. but it rarely has since.

the quintessential Barkley passage of play remains: 1) head down 2) dribble around aimlessly while the defence gets into position 3) miss/ignore open looks 4) shoot from an unlikely angle 5) first defender/row Z.

Lukaku's goal figures could have easily been at least 50% higher still had we paired him with someone aware of the play around him.

and too often, the quintessential Lukaku passage of play was 1) find a great position in the box 2) beckon, gesture, plead, beg and cajole Ross to look up and pass 3) despair as Ross repeats steps 1-5 above.

i'm not one for the childish rat/snake accusations, and if he wants to stay i would welcome it, but i think he's still quite limited by selfishness and a lack of vision and awareness, and unlikely to achieve his potential unless his on-field mentality matures. he has a goal-mouth poacher's mindset, but from behind the goal-mouth, and without any of the goals.

absolute nonsense, plays more head up football than anyone in the squad other than rooney

Weird thing to claim. What does head up football look like? Surely a very limited player who never takes anyone on, like Jagielka, plays more head up football. You can tell from how often he plays it long like.

On a serious note, Sigurdsson rarely takes more than a few touches on the ball and is always looking for a quick pass. Not saying he's perfect like, but if that's what head up means

You must hate Messi, Maradon or George Best goals then....what a stupid post.

Runs the length of the pitch and bangs one in the top corner, gets criticised for not passing.

This is why we can't have nice things.

It's true though to be honest, it's a team game and he should have passed because his team mate was in a better position.

Fantastic goal overrall but he should've passed.
This is actually true, that was a great goal but while it has deluded fans on the type of player he is it could also be one of the reasons he is so bad at passing to a blue shirt. He annoyingly time and time again will turn into a blind alley rather then pass to another player. For every great goal there will of been countless times when he should of passed it but was too self obsessed to do so.
I'e never looked at the Newcastle goal like that but you make a great point.

Part of the problem was the complete lack of player for him to pass to in the midfield. Him holding the ball 50 yards from goal and doing nothing with it can be irritating to some - Koeman being number one - but it is very nice to have someone like that. Problem is, if you give it up 50 yards from goal and you can't defend anyone or tackle, the counter attack can be deadly. Koeman didn't want him to be a holding midfielder, and frankly, his defensive deficiencies make it tough for him to play there. That being said, Unsworth finally embraced Rooney's deep holding role and I'm sure Big Sam would let Ross play where he wanted to and just go with it. But I do think he's better farther up the pitch, closer to goal.

I think the problem is that we've all seen Roscoe go at guys, beat them, and create chances. He's a handful when he's running at guys. Koeman wanted him to play quickly and directly, but didn't surround him with the help he need to do that. He's also got a rep for diving, so the refs seemed to stop calling fouls against him even when he was fouled.

I still think he'd be fantastic in our midfield, especially with Gylfi. He'd not be afraid to give up the ball because he'd have someone that would give it back to him in more dangerous situations.

He's a greedy bell but we have defo missed him at times. We all get so frustrated because it's so obvious as to how good a player he can be, unfortunately it looks like he will never truly fulfil his potential with us.
