2017/18 Ross Barkley

the goal against Newcastle represents Barkley at both his best and worst.

he of course showed great strength and composure, but there were probably at least four moments during the run where it made much more sense for him to have passed. and it never occurred to him even to look.

true, on that one occasion, the end justified the means. but it rarely has since.

the quintessential Barkley passage of play remains: 1) head down 2) dribble around aimlessly while the defence gets into position 3) miss/ignore open looks 4) shoot from an unlikely angle 5) first defender/row Z.

Lukaku's goal figures could have easily been at least 50% higher still had we paired him with someone aware of the play around him.

and too often, the quintessential Lukaku passage of play was 1) find a great position in the box 2) beckon, gesture, plead, beg and cajole Ross to look up and pass 3) despair as Ross repeats steps 1-5 above.

i'm not one for the childish rat/snake accusations, and if he wants to stay i would welcome it, but i think he's still quite limited by selfishness and a lack of vision and awareness, and unlikely to achieve his potential unless his on-field mentality matures. he has a goal-mouth poacher's mindset, but from behind the goal-mouth, and without any of the goals.

come at me with your chances created stats.

To be fair you didn't watch any of our matches last season if you genuinely believe that to be the case.

the worst thing about all this is the suspense, I reckon he's off personally or he would have signed the minute koeman was binned, still live in hope he'll sign a new deal though as the quietness and lack of direct quotes from barkley himself saying he wants out, I mean he is our best player regardless

He is having nandos and a glass of rose with Sam now as we speak, trying to get the deal done.

The decision to leave was made a long time ago by Barkley , I think probably as long ago as when RM was manager. It has been an exercise in running down the contract as quietly as possible since then.
Ross is not unique, we see it with all clubs including our neighbours. It is the way the modern game has gone and I believe his destination will be Spurs rather than Chelsea.
The bargaining chip that we have is the World Cup in the summer and the players desire to get back into the national squad. He cannot afford to be a reserve at Everton from January onwards but Daniel Levy may be slow to put his hand too depply into his pocket.

That’s some narrative you are setting up there mush to justify you hating on a local lad who is your best player!

I don't hate Ross, never have, I hope he stays but I doubt it.

I understand however your inability to comprehend what is happening here at a big Premiership club. Having players that actually mean something in the game and that have value , both monetary and emotionally to club and supporters. We do try to understand what it must be like for you to support a club that seems to just lie there like a beached dolphin. I imagine that over time anger turned to frustration until you arrived at apathy.
Hopefully time spent on here will benefit you and rekindle your enthusiasm for the game.

You sound like a Liverpool fan there don’t you mush? You’re so superior pal!

This is actually true, that was a great goal but while it has deluded fans on the type of player he is it could also be one of the reasons he is so bad at passing to a blue shirt. He annoyingly time and time again will turn into a blind alley rather then pass to another player. For every great goal there will of been countless times when he should of passed it but was too self obsessed to do so.
I'e never looked at the Newcastle goal like that but you make a great point.
Exactly buddy.

The film 'goal' comes to mind if you've seen it
