2017/18 Ross Barkley

He 100% is mate, the fact Barkley is Scouse shouldn't cloud anyone's judgment on him as it seems to be doing with so many others.

Look at it completely dispassionately through stats.

And by stats I don't just mean goals/assists.

How often do they touch the ball? How often do they create chances? How good are the chances they create? How often do they beat a man which creates space further up the pitch? How far do they carry the ball forwards in a game?

Sigurdsson has a good goalscoring record, a good assist record, but his all round game is poor by PL standards.

When you break it down like that Barkley is far better. He is also 4.5 years younger.

Stats please ????
For empiricists: apparently Barkley created more chances than any other PL player last season. NEA about that like, but the Championship manager generation seem impressed by such stuff.

Anyone watching Barkley and Sigurdsson can quickly come to the conclusion who is the footballer and who does party tricks. I'm not knocking Sigurdsson. He's good at the limited things he can do. But he's never the thoroughbred Barkley is in a month of Sundays.

If party tricks is who has the most assists and goals created then I want to go to that party.

'Well rounded' doesn't mean 'goals scored'.

His end product was fine last season, because his role in the team is to create chances and link up play. He did that superbly.

He had games where he was very good, but more games where he wasn't good, and a number of games where he was woefully poor. Need more consistency at 23. Lukaku is the big miss this year. 25 goals to make up. We won't miss Ross.

I pretty much completely disagree with that. I think we'll miss Barkley far more than Lukaku, because what Barkley offered the team over 90 minutes was fantastic. Sigurdsson is essentially someone with luxury player-type skill but with work rate - that's good in one way, as he'll run all day and be involved, but his overall output will be sporadic compared to Ross.

Barkley was only inconsistent in the eyes of the uninformed. I don't say that lightly as I know it makes me sound like an elitist [Poor language removed], but in this case so be it. He had far fewer outright bad games than Lukaku last season, fewer than most of his teammates too, and was essential in the majority of games to how we played.

Back to goal, in the middle of the opponent half, receive the ball, tightly mark but somehow wriggle away and create something. Well not every time, but nobody does that in our team now. He might not be the goalscoring midfielder, but he definitely is a wriggler and quite decent at that.

I completely disagree with all of that too for what it's worth.

Giving Blues a disservice there mate.
We all knew we would miss his goals, some pretended he wasn't all that to soften the blow a bit.

Whatever we think of Lukaku, he didn't mess us about, he said he was off.. And he's already scoring for his new team.

The whole Ross thing is now, IMO, unsettling the clubs preseason. ( even though we are unbeaten like.. )
Fair enough. Lukaku was honest about his future and i respect him for it. However quite a lot were fed up with him wanting to leave and were glad to see him go. We are now spending our big money on mid fielders but I think it should go on a striker.
Although we have won games in pre season, the performances are awful and look to me like a lukaku shaped hole.
I think Ross situation is upsetting the fan base rather than the players. They know he is gone, it's just a matter of when.

Barkley is a 5 goal a season man. His end product was unacceptable last season.

Barkley provides tempo. He weighs in with goals and assists.

You know when you watched that lot labouring against a team of Slovakian plumbers the other night for the second time in a week - that's what having Barkley in the team helps avoid.

Davies can provide a lot of dynamism, sure, and he's a good player for that. But Ross and Davies last season combined to make games very difficult for opponents to settle in and we forced them back on the strength of it.

Sigurdsson will give us a few more goals. However, that wont compensate for what will be lost.
