2017/18 Ross Barkley

Barkley provides tempo. He weighs in with goals and assists.

You know when you watched that lot labouring against a team of Slovakian plumbers the other night for the second time in a week - that's what having Barkley in the team helps avoid.

Davies can provide a lot of dynamism, sure, and he's a good player for that. But Ross and Davies last season combined to make games very difficult for opponents to settle in and we forced them back on the strength of it.

Sigurdsson will give us a few more goals. However, that wont compensate for what will be lost.

Goals is quite clearly what we need. We don't have Lukaku to rely on this year. We need people stepping up which Ross would not do.

This is all irrelevant tho as he's wanting to leave and heeding daft career advice.

You get a lot more of them by dominating the flow of a game than gaining set pieces...which is what Swansea relied on last season - hence Sigurdsson's input.

I think the problem with Barkley is he either provides it or takes it away. I really wish we been able to keep him as I thought he would be perfect to pair with Klassen as they compensate for each other's weaknesses. I could see Sandro taking the role of Barkley a bit and Koeman bringing in another striker.

I pretty much completely disagree with that. I think we'll miss Barkley far more than Lukaku, because what Barkley offered the team over 90 minutes was fantastic. Sigurdsson is essentially someone with luxury player-type skill but with work rate - that's good in one way, as he'll run all day and be involved, but his overall output will be sporadic compared to Ross.

Barkley was only inconsistent in the eyes of the uninformed. I don't say that lightly as I know it makes me sound like an elitist [Poor language removed], but in this case so be it. He had far fewer outright bad games than Lukaku last season, fewer than most of his teammates too, and was essential in the majority of games to how we played.
I'm a Barkley fan, & would be made up to keep him, but his output has dropped & to say Lukaku was worse then him last season.. I can't agree with that. Ironically, with the players we're bringing in, as they actuàlly venture past the half way line, Barkley would of had more time and space.

Interesting stats re Barkley v Sigurdsson goal scoring comparisons:

In his PL career Sigurdsson has averaged 7 goals per season.
In his PL career Barkley has averaged 5 goals per season.

Take out penalties and just use open play goals...

Sigurdsson has averaged 6 goals per season.
Barkley has averaged 5 goals per season.

We need a striker most importantly but I'm very happy with Siguurdson providing the striker is also coming. If we don't get the centre forward then the whole window is ruined.

Agreed and he wont be coming until we have the Barklay money .... unless we do an I.O.U

Barkley was fantastic second half of season and instrumental to our sustained form.

It's folly to suggest we will not miss him sir.

If we replace him, we won't miss him, simples!

As DaveK kept saying at the time you speak of, once we were out the cup and had no pressure on us, and we had a decent run of games, it's hardly surprising he did well as he is generally a choker in games that mean anything.

5 goals and 8 assists is easily replaced mate, step forward Mr Iceland.

It hasn't dropped, his output was actually extremely good last season. Lukaku was far worse as an actual footballer in that team. Incredible goalscorer, pedestrian footballer.

He comfortably is the more rounded footballer. That's not even controversial.

Depends what you want from a footballer I suppose. Sigurdsson's defensive work is far better for example. He makes a ridiculous number of interceptions and winning the ball high up the pitch is something Koeman is really looking for.

This is what I mean about Barkley critics being misinformed. They always boil down his impact on a team to the headline figures of goals and assists.

The reality is he offers a ridiculous amount beyond those two end stats, such as carrying the tempo of the game (as davek points out), intelligently moving into space, freeing up room for others in the process, taking a ball to feet, getting teammates around him in support by holding play, passing forward to transition into the final third etc. etc. etc.

He was the lynchpin of our team last season.
