Hey @COYBL25 hows the recovery from Covid going running wise? From one of your earlier posts I started taking antihistamines ( Clarin) in combination with Niacin( nicotinic acid). I am believing , but can’t prove it , that the niacin has helped my Covid recovery . After 3 months on it I m certainly not back to the levels I was running this time last year and the marathon training I was doing then. I’m also not sure I am at the same level as I was in March , pre Covid. But… there has been definite progress from the completely wiped out feeling a hard run used to leave. My marathon training was all over the shop, never knowing how I would feel a mile into a run and having plans A, B, C to cut it short.

I did a 16 miler today, and I’m tired, it wasn’t as fast as I hoped but that may just be the general tiredness from training . I have a couple of half marathon races planned for next month, that will tell me a bit more about how the recovery is going. So far then progress is being made towards getting back to something like normal.

My training is going really well, however I’m finding that I’m destroyed for up to three after races. Where as pre covid, it’d normally take a week.

I did a reasonably tough fifteen miler in the Lakes, in that heat at the beginning of July and I’ve been that wiped out since I did it, that I’ve decided to take this week off completely - which I’ve never done before, even with heavy colds.

Sounds very similar to what you’ve described - times all over the place, heavy legs and not able to complete any long distance stuff.

I’m still taking the anti histamines and my breathing is generally ok, it’s just that feeling of being shattered during the run ?

Having run all my life, I have now got Mortons Neuroma in both feet and may ever run again....you never know what you had until you lost it...

Have you been to a sports podiatrist / foot specialist ?

The only reason I ask, is that I suffered badly from metatarsalgia in one of my feet and got a lot of help in managing it from a very good sports podiatrist. Who also put me onto a change of shoe, which was a game changer in the long run.

Yeh, I went to a specialist and had new orthotics made. They have a rocker bar in the centre that means I roll over the problem area. I have terrible bunions and have worn stupid trainers for forty years.
Im going for a second opioid soon as I feel I can run again
Im Really sad about

Are you in the North West mate, as the fella I saw is brilliant ( he looks after the Man Utd players feet )

The first thing he looks at, after your feet is your trainers - he’s a mad off road ultra runner himself, so knows his stuff.

He completely changed what I look for in shoes now, which has made a massive difference.

He insists on them being at least half a size too big and wide enough for your toes to splay. Plus he’s a big advocate of maxi cushioning shoes too.

Prior to him, I paid a small fortune for a laser scan of my gait and custom built orthotics, which actually made things worse, so I know where you’re coming from.

I’m still recovering from a 1/2 marathon I did yesterday, 24 deg at the 11 o’clock start , lots of hills and 950ft of climb on what was otherwise a nice rural course, with the last 3 miles on trails. I got suckered into starting too fast as the first two miles were largely downhill and knew from mile 4 it was all about survival , and the need to walk up a few hills in blazing sun . Still , I got there in the end in a slow and painful 2 hrs 05 mins. : ?

Cant find the euro games thread, the mens 4x100m relays walloped to gold but the ladies made a significant mess and DNF. shame that.

Did Couch to 5k earlier this year, as part of an overall fitness kick I’ve been on for 3 years now. I’d be lying if I said I liked running but there’s an undeniable buzz from going a bit further/faster each time.

Completed Tough Mudder 10k yesterday and was over the moon. Loads of fun, and a nice way for me to see how far I’ve come (and how far I have to go!).

Signing up for the 15k TM next year, and planning to do a few 5k runs, maybe even up it to 10 if I’m feeling brave, in the meantime.

Tough Mudder was the first organised run I ever did and got me into organised off road running.

I know it’s expensive and it’s a big business, but they’re great fun aren’t they ?

If you enjoyed Tough Mudder, how about maybe looking at a non competitive trail race somewhere ?

Amazing fun. 10k seemed to fly by, barely felt like exercise. Feeling it a bit more today, though…

I wouldn’t rule anything out at this stage. Defo doing TM again next year, so probably do a couple of 5k or similar in between. I’ll look into trail races.

The second time I did TM, I trained for it and found the running side of it too easy and then switched to trail running races.

I don’t know where you live, but I always fly the flag for the Lakeland Trails races.

Super friendly, a variety of locations, a variety of distances to suit everyone - 10K - ultra marathons and the most scenic courses, well marked out courses.

I‘m doing one of theirs, a 12 miler, in the forests / fells around Cartmel, the weekend after next.

Free sticky toffee pudding at the end

If you’re local, there’s another good one in a couple of weeks - The Sandstone Trail race.

Two distances - 17.5 / 11 miles.

The 11 miler is a good entry level off road race, as there‘s no nutty climbs and is mainly through farmland / trails and forest.

Plus, you can either enter, non competitive race, which runs in tandem with a competitive race.

I live on the Isle of Man, so anything like that will take a bit of planning.
