Running 2022

My shoes were close to needing replaced. Possibly went off the cliff during a long run. Never had an issue like it before and I’ve been running for 10 years, just not this kind of distance.

Same with me, mine only started when I started training for a marathon.

I was having to stop every 30 mins or so on my long runs and take my shoe off and my foot.

I'm on Week 9/16 training for the Belfast Marathon. On my long run on Friday past I started to get a pain in the ball of my foot at 16km. It felt like the sock was bunching up under it. I finished the 28km run and found my sock was perfect. After an hour or two just walking around normally round the house, the pain and feeling came back again.

Tried a 10k this week and felt the same thing so I have Gel insoles coming tomorrow to try to ease the pain a bit. No way am I getting this close without running the Marathon, especially after the events of the last 2 years.
Does sound like metatarsalgia . I’ve had it over the years and it came back in both feet about 6 weeks ago. I think it was new Nike shoes that triggered it, very much “ rocker” type, plus increase in speed . Any way, I use gel pads under both feet. I used ones with a single loop 5 years ago and even ran a marathon in them , trained to 20 miles ok. I use a different type now, thinner called “ gel toe loops” by Hoogoo. I ran a fast 1/2 m in them yesterday no problems. I have a marathon in 10 weeks , hoping to drop them by then, but not a big deal using gel pads , it’s just a bit fiddly getting them to stay in position when you put the socks on . Then it’s ok. Good luck if you try them.

Cheers for all your replies.

Can't wait to get the Marathon done. The training alone is brutal but I've been pleased to get new 5k and 10k PBs during the training. My running is stronger now than its ever been so there are plus points.

I‘ve used those gel pads with the toe loops in the past too. The way I used to keep them in position, was with a tiny blob of super glue, on the sole of my foot.

I did the Inverness 1/2 marathon yesterday , 3,400 entries my largest field for a few years. I worked hard and managed to knock 50 secs off the time I did it in 5 years ago so happy with that, finishing in a pleasing 1h 50 min 49 sec, and 3rd M70 - the leading m70 did an impressive 88 mins ?

Downside to the day was checking the results after my run ,0-0 and the n 0-1 by the time I reached my car ?

That`s a cracking time mate, even more so, with having to wade through a massive field like that.

I have three aims when I take part in races :

1. Enjoy the day.
2. Finish.
3. Don`t come last lol

The only event I didn`t really enjoy, was a self navigated, fell race in Yorkshire, that was packed full of local club runners - it wasn`t very friendly at all.

Next time run a longer race? Half seriously, I’ve enjoyed getting out on my bike on Saturday mornings and not watching every match.

It wasn’t too crowded once you’d done 1/2 mile or so , but there was the usual 2 and 3s ahead who insist on running side by side chatting having decided they’d start off in a time zone they couldn’t manage.
Your 3 aims apply to my cross country races, I’m happy to watch the younglings surge away and chat to the Marshalls as I go round and to the time keepers at the finish . Road races I’m different , focussed and competing against my self , don’t speak to me for a few minutes after finishing I might be sick ?

@COYBL25 got my Hoka speedgoat 4a today. Went half a size up as advised. Still feel a bit tight. If these turn out to be gash will invoice you €120

If they don’t feel right, whatever you do, don’t go out for a run in them, as you won’t be able to return them.

They‘re quite narrow too, so allow for that when breaking them in - normally takes about 100 miles.

I‘m just breaking in a new pair of Hoka Challengers and they’re only starting to feel “ right “ after 6/7 runs in them.

I think they’re ok. Bit narrow like you say. Looking forward to giving them a run out later. I remember you saying that post covid you were struggling to reach your previous running times. Has that improved? Tried a run couple of days ago and had to stop after a couple of miles

Funnily enough, the last couple of weeks, my times have got much better, so it`s taken 18 mths to get back to anywhere near where I was pre Covid.

I`m still about 15 secs a mile slower, but I can live with that.

It was the hills that were the problem, I was blowing like an old steam train, trying to get up them lol

Aye that was exactly what happened. I have a regular run that requires a steep climb to begin. Only a week or so out of covid and I wasn’t able to run for a while during so hopefully just a temp thing

Just ordered Son1 his first set of track spikes, and was thinking of my first pair. Pretty sure I ran in these:

And here is a fun link to visual history of (some) famous Nike spikes.

My main problem now, is starting off.

If there‘s any type of incline at the start of my runs, I really struggle, due to breathlessness.

I was never like this pre covid and now means starting at the back in races for the first 3/4 miles ( which doesn’t bother me )
