Running

I got Covid three weeks ago , recovered ok , just started back gentle running then 10 days ago I had chest problems , turns out I’ve got a secondary chest infection and a course of antibiotics needed. Very frustrating , I’ve missed three planned events so far , is what it is though so it’ll be a gentle comeback when I’m ready 🤷‍♂️

Make an appt with the GP and explain to the GP that covid has goosed your lungs and you`ll get a script for one.

You have to use it every morning and last thing at night for it to work through, as I was just using to now and then to begin with and it didn`t make any difference.

It was only when I started using it every day that it started to work.

Cheers. Worth looking into. I've ran out of options really.

Don`t make the cardinal mistake, that a lot of runners do in their first race and go off too fast.

It`s very easy to get carried away and try to go off with the front of the pack, only to blow yourself out.

If you`re looking at 1hr 45, you should be finishing with the top end of the middle group, so aim to start in the middle of the pack, until you get into your stride and then work your way forward if you feel comfortable.

Since I had my first bout of covid three years ago, which messed my lungs up, I now start near the back and the amount of runners, who`ve gone too hard, too fast, that I start to pick off from mile 8 onwards is unreal.
Yeah a few of my more experienced friends have said the same. Been guilty of doing similar when I started doing parkrun, got to remind myself that it's not about beating anybody else and just to run my own race.

I think I had initially entered my estimated finish time at 2h - 2h15 for the staggered starts, so will aim to keep an eye on the 1h55 pacer and then judge it as I get into my stride as you say.

Don` get too hung up on times, just enjoy it ;)

Can anyone recommend some budget-ish road shoes? It will only probably be for 10k a week, plus the odd race so don't want to spend loads

I currently use Hoka Torrent 2 and do the majority of my running off road, in one form or another, but I'd rather get some separate road shoes to make them last
Have a look on Vinted.

I bought some barely worn ASICS gel Nimbus for a tenner.

Filter by size and condition (always very good or better).

maybe we should get a GOT running club started and like true evertonians get in shape by January

Got a 1/2 on sunday, PR doable if I can catch the 1:35 pace group by the 8mile mark.

Got a bargain on a pair of Hoka last week, got them for £84 delivered marked down from £145. Ok, still not cheap, but that’s a huge saving on a decent pair of running shoes

I have Hoka's too for trail, they are great. I guess they will be 'last seasons' or the model behind the newest. I do that too.

I ended up getting some Brooks for road (could have been about the same saving as yours) and they are great for road. I'm not sure why I ran the odd road race in my Hoka's, I probably made it a lot harder for myself

First time I’ve had Hoka myself, still breaking them in with a few long walks, I have collapsed arches on my feet so currently these do help to correct my feet they are also causing a bit of discomfort in my calf due to the angle of my foot being slightly raised if you get my meaning 😂

Previously I’ve worn adidas/Nike/saucony/brooks and Salomon for running … oh and a pair of ASICS trail shoes…. Salomon were deffo the best for me

Does anyone use a home treadmill? Thinking of getting one, especially for the winter months. I’m no marathon runner, just purely fitness 3/4 times a week. Can’t say I’ve ever used one, just tired of having to cancel a run because of the weather, and don’t fancy joining a gym.

It takes a while to get used to your first pair of Hoka`s, as apart from the Torrents, the rest are like wearing big bouncy pillows on your feet.

It was my podiatrist that put me onto them and I hated them at first, as I`d worn zero drop trail shoes for years, but I`ve been wearing them now for about five years and apart from the fell shoes I wear when it`s super muddy, I wouldn`t wear anything else now.

There`s a lot of snobbery involved in running footwear and a few years back hardly anyone wore Hoka and you`d get looks of sympathy at races if you turned up in a pair. They`re now the most worn shoes at every race I go to and that includes Salomon and Inov8.

I tried the treadmill during the winter a couple of years a go. It kept me ticking over but I would still rather run outside in the wet and cold.
It was good for sprinting but otherwise it was very boring in the gym looking at the same wall for an hour then nearly falling off the bloody machine just trying to adjust my headphones

thanks mate. might be worth me going to a gym and giving it a go, see if I can stay motivated using one.

I love winter running most of the time, the only time I don't really go is if it's icey as I fell over once and it really hurt lol
