Running

I’ve just started running again and as stupid as it’s going to sound - it’s hard remembering how to do it. I haven’t ran properly for years, I have done other cardio. Currently doing 3.5 miles in around 35 minutes. Some days I feel great others like I’m about to have a heart attack. I do the same route, it’s frustrating as anything.
I’ve just started back again after Covid/ Chest infection and I’m starting off with run/ walk/ run , 3:30 mins run/ 30sec walk. This helps me to increase the distance without too much stress on the body . And you gradually pick up the pace, it’s like doing 3 1/2 min intervals followed by 30 sec walk.
Ive got a 10 km trail race on Sunday , 1 mile uphill at the start , I’m just hoping to get around at a reasonable pace.

I think timings is the worst thing about running tbh, it's one of the reasons I never bothered with clubs and stuff, and put off racing for ages

Now I do a few races with my mates, some are in clubs, and I am by far the 'best' out my mates, and my times would often get me in their 'a' group and every race I get hounded to join their clubs now. Found it loads less stressful when I just ran in a cow field on my own

This.

Often better to "go with the flow" unless you're targeting a race time.

Not only that GPS isn't always accurate when not on the roads

You’ve described the very reasons why I’ve never joined a club.

The only self navigated trail race I ever did was packed full of club runners.

From the word go it was unfriendly and social / fun runners like me and seven others where just left to fend for ourselves, as they all hared off across the moors.

They even did the presentations whilst we where still wading through the bogs on the course, which I thought was really disrespectful.

One of the first thing I look for now when I enter a race, is how many runners from clubs are running.

If there‘s a lot of club runners, I won’t enter it, as I know what it’s going to be like.

Stick to your cow field mate.

My experiences are different! , I’ve been a member of an Orienteering clubs , Road running, Hill running clubs for about 45 years . As I’m retired , most of my running is in the day on my own , but I do enjoy the occasional club training sessions I do, particularly “ long run Sundays” . There’s a camaraderie in events too from chatting to fellow club members, particularly at cross country and trail events and in running in your club vest , being cheered on by fellow club members.

I live in a relatively sparsely populated part of the country, no big cities close, by so the majority of races I do , cross country, trail , road etc , are organised by clubs , and I do my bit by volunteering, helping to keep entry costs down . Without the Clubs we’d be left with just a few very expensive events organised by big organisations to do.

I guess that's why the Lakeland trails do well, they have the 'challenge' and the 'race'. Think they've got it spot on tbh, allows me n the missus to do different event's and switch child watching duties

It is definitely noticeable, the quality, organisation and general feel when a running event is organised by a club, as opposed to one by large event companies.
I remember when it used to be about a £1 a mile to enter a running race

I’ve done them all mate, from the table in the field, at the bottom of a hill, to 1200 people setting off together across Morecambe Bay.

From my own personal experiences, the big events can be friendlier than the smaller ones, due there being a cross section of runners at the bigger events - age, sizes and groups of people doing the race for charity and having a day out with their mates.

I‘m not competitive though, so I can see that these type of races would annoy the hell out of the racing snakes lol

First half a marathon race tomorrow, had a bit of a cough which is slowly going so will prob just take it easy and enjoy the run
Peterborough half. I'll be there watching. Shame, as it's pb potential and weather looks favourable. It's not quite the scenic course to enjoy, but plenty of support.
Good luck!! What shirt you wearing, I'll keep an eye out
