Running

Yep I can remember when I ran a sub 25 minute 5 k.

Mind you I must have a good memory because it was about 15 years ago!

Did a lot of cross country and a few marathons when I was a lot younger.

Both my Achilles are knackered as a result
You’re never too old to get back into it mate, parkruns are 5km , very sociable and there will be one not far from you 🙂. It can take time for Achilles to heal , but heal they do , you’ll probably find that with a few regular exercises and stretching they’ll be good again.

No my running days are well and truly over.

Snapped my left Achilles about 10 years ago and strained my right quite badly 3 years ago BL.

The rehab program was excruciatingly painful and lengthy .

I managed to get back to playing table tennis but no where near the same level as before.

Occasionally I will try to run on treadmill but every time my Achilles starts to ache after 5/10 minutes so I stop , it's just not worth the chance of a major re injury.

So, I get my cardio on the bike and rower. I even have to be careful playing TT. Any more than an hour at a time and I will feel it the next day.

Oh indeed , it was just a gentle tease , I know you go to the gym so it sounds like you’ve got the right balance with your bike and rowing, less strain on achilles and knees.

Which ones did you get mate ?

I got the Hawkshead 16k and the Ambleside 15K.
Staveley 18k, Ambleside 23k (really should've gone for the 15k, but fancied the "coffin trail"... probably regret it), Keswick 15k (on the basis its the day before Great North run the missus intends to enter, easier to get to than from down south)

I did the Ambleside 23K a couple of years ago, it’s deffo their hardest “ short “ distance race.

Over 2500ft of climbing and a mix of trail, fell and road running. I woefully underestimated how tough it would be !

It was hot as hell though, with people fainting due to the heat !

It’s their only one, where parking is difficult, as Ambleside is a nightmare - get there handy.

Stavely is a good one, as apart from the start, where there‘s quite a steep climb, it’s relatively flat, although it’s proper lowland fell terrain, so its been wet, you’ll need fell shoes, as it gets really boggy.

Stavely has what’s called “ the Sting in the Tail “ at the end - pretty steep climb.

It‘s Hawkshead that has the Coffin Trail.

Neither are anything to worry about, as they’re just steep and long climbs, nothing like you get on the likes of Snowdon lol

... checks their website to see if i've been mis-sold the 23k , and can ask to transfer to 15k 😆.
Nope, definitely say's old coffin trail to Grasmere.

Thanks for the pointers, intend to stay over hopefully, to alleviate the parking. Certainly need to invest in fell running shoes, even some vaseline by the sounds of it👍

If you haven’t already got one, get a hydration vest for Ambleside, as it’s hot, it gets even hotter as you climb into the fells ( hence why people where fainting )

You need one that can carry at least a litre in two 500 mil bottles.

You need to be prepared to be out for well over three hours.

Ambleside is expensive to stay at
and imo, the price doesn’t match the quality of what you get.

Coniston is 20 mins away and the accommodation is better and less expensive - but not as busy as Ambleside with all the shops etc.

Depends what you’re after really.
