Sack Race 20/21

Do you want them crying in the streets? He's clearly not up to the job, hasn't been on the end of a vitriolic campaign (though empty stands no doubt contribute to that) and will be rewarded very handsomely for his efforts. If something's not working then changing it isn't a shameful action.

It's not as if Lampard went there thinking that Abramovich is a patient man known for allowing managers time to ride out poor spells - and they have been appalling in some recent performances.

Club legend Howard Kendall got a hell of a lot of grief from fans during even his first spell. Condemning all around while not acknowledging that it's largely standard behaviour is cultish behaviour better suited to that lot across the park. And even the great Howard Kendall completely bombed Big Nev out of the club with barely a whimper from the fans or a chance to acknowledge his career at Everton - that's football.

If you want to see shameful look at the complete banishment of Shankly from the RS before embracing his memory for marketing purposes. Or the club fully endorsing CGI zombie Paisley flogging financial products for a particularly contemptible financial institution while former players who supposedly respected him take full part.

Of course not but it's the idea of gladly seeing the back of him when they're 5 points from the RS and the top 4. It's fickle and brushed off as if he had zero attachment to the club.

As for the others mentioned...those managers either won lots and we're stuck with through the grief. That's the difference. The owner having some faith.

But it's inevitable at Chelsea

This will have major repercussions in the league and the CL. If the new manager gets a bounce out of those players and gets on a run then they could make CL at a damaging cost to any top 6 team that misses out. They’ll also be a threat in the CL itself.

If he gets a front four of Havertz Pulisic Ziyech Werner firing, has Kante sweeping up behind him and keeps a solid defence then there’s no reason they won’t do well.
That's a big if. If ancholotti gets DCL Richarlson and James firing, has Allan sweeping up behind and keeps a solid defense there's no reason we can't do well..

Part of me kind of feels sorry for Lampard. Think he's still a bit wet behind the ears in terms of managerial experience but I did think the signs where there that he had a plan at least. He's a got a relatively young and inexperienced squad there in terms of Premier League appearances but loads of talent - still needs time to all come together.

But given the RS are going through a particularly poor spell of form they aren't the benchmark are they?

Performances tell a story and if the powers that be at Chelsea are seeing woeful performances or quite possibly hearing less than stellar reports from the training ground then there's going to be grounds for concern given the amount of money thrown at the team during the summer. Abramovich is seeing huge financial investments withering on the vine and needs to do something to rescue that.

I'd hesitate using points or position as the sole barometer of worth for two reasons.

1 - Their target surely isn't being 5 points from the top 4. It's being comfortably within the top 4 and in the mix for top 1. There's no way they've spent that much money on anything else.

2 - Remember when Allardyce took a "relegation threatened team" and then "took them to eighth". To outsiders it was a ridiculous and petulant sacking done at the whim of a deluded fanbase. To anyone who sat and watched the dross served up it was clearly the correct decision and the margins in the league has little to do with it.
