Safari 4 is my browser of choice, as it's pretty cutting edge in terms of features, but still in beta.

This site doesn't work so well with it, and many of the buttons for some reason don't work. Which may well be down to the forum software.

Just given you a heads up for when all the other browsers catch up.

Fair enough, but whether or not you meant to be unkind to Ghost, that's how your posts came across to me. But you're a nice person, which is why I was surprised at how you were speaking to him. It's not like you to have a pop at someone like that. Maybe I'm just in an ultra-sensitive mood today and am reading to much into what you said.

I think its because I was being serious for a moment, should stop that. Doesn't really suit me. I also have a habit of being rather blunt.

You honestly thought Ghost earned £30,000 a year, from doing 100 websites (of which only 5 or 6 are in his portfolio? - You need to improve that Ghost...) in 5 years?

Do the math (y)

I assume he meant from both jobs, a substantial amount of that will be his restaurant work.

Danny you really don't have a clue mate, and your starting to sound ridiculous. I do a hell of a lot of work for clients where I am not allowed to portfolio the work. Plus I do work which I don't want to portfolio because it's just coding and not my design.

Ever heard of Dan Cederholm? World class Web Designer, has very little in his portfolio, does that mean he does very little? Nope, it just means he is not able to showcase everything. Being a ghost designer, it's like white labelling. Much of my work is involved in that. So there we go.

Don't know where you got that from. If I thought he was a fraud, I would say so. He clearly isn't, because he can design websites?

We just appear to have a different idea as to what constitutes to be a professional web designer.

I have a clear distinction;

Professional web designer - A very small minority of web designers, someone who can earn a comfortable living out of it in isolation.

Some would agree, some would disagree. Each to their own and all that.

As Ghost said, and he's spot on... theres a ridiculous amount of "web designers" out there. Who are no better than someone with a disposable camera claiming to be a professional photographer, due to that... I have a very clear distinction as to what constitutes a professional web designer. Which I have reiterated time and time again and I wont any further. Ghost has his, I disagree. I dont think designing business cards is a characteristic of a web designer for example. I also dont regard myself as a professional, but according to Ghost, I am. Am I attempting to expose myself as a fraud? No.

Thing is, how do you know all this? How many web designers do you know that work in isolation and make a comfortable living out of it? You don't, you have these opinions, but they are all assumptions.

A freelance web designer is not a hobby, it's a freelance web designer - it's a job. End of chat mate.

So my job is a freelance web designer?

Sound. Will stick that on my CV

Why? What part of that post is ridiculous?

Neb thought you earned £150,000 in 5 years from doing 100 websites. You didn't?

Unless you are referring to my comment about your portfolio. If you have done 100 websites, its a fair comment to suggest you should include more in your portfolio than about 5? Some of which have upgraded since your design? Thats not ridiculous.

Exactly, I run a forum dont you know :P(y)

Nah seriously, I think you should throw more websites on your portfolio. Would make it look better :)

To be honest mate, most of the websites I did are on this site:

PrimarySite: The Primary School website specialists

I had an exclusive client who I designed school sites for. They were not the one's I would personally sign off on, but I had to bury my pride and do the work.

Some more work I did was on adult sites for a couple of clients, which obviously I'm not going to portfolio.

But at the moment 50% of my workload is me just coding and not designing, so I can't portfolio that, because as far as the client is concerned, I don't exist - I am the ghost coder.

Sounds pretty cool. May need to change my name.

See what you mean Ghost but surely from the 100 and odd sites you could squeeze more in to your portfolio - or even at least mention how many websites you have done? Maybe even in a sentence "A selection from X amount of websites....." then show a select few.

The average viewer of your website would think you have only done 5 websites. Dont kick off at me, its just a suggestion

It's better criticism, it's more constructive and doesn't make me feel like ****.

It does need work, and it's something I am going to be addressing.

I use IE.

Should I be switching over to Firefox then?

How about Chrome?

In my opinion, yes. Although I use a Mac, I don't bother with Safari. It's ugly, which is odd for Apple, and the newest version of the software is designed for the latest version of OSX, which I don't have. But I do use a PC as well, and find IE incredibly annoying. Firefox is just a more pleasant experience in my opinion. So there. b)

Use Firefox or Chrome.

IE is naff, and so is Opera. Avant is basically a skinned IE, so avoid that too.

Actually, Opera isn't naff - technically. Plus it's fairly quick and has world class designer Jon Hicks working over their in Sweden sorting out the interface. It does however suffer from ridicule due to it's bizarre decision to charge for it's software.

It's free now, but the damage and bad rep has been done.
