The tactics were right but I'm not having that our players couldn't have played a lot better. Once again we looked pedestrian in our pace during a derby. Almost as if we were from a different division.

Defensively, fair enough. We limited them to few chances but I still think a lot of players need to think long and hard about that performance and whether it was good enough.

The result was 1-1 and a point.

You may have free flowing football and end up losing 3-0. What matters is only the result.

Hence why I said I was buoyed by the result and almost nothing else.

That it ended up a draw is not down to Sam's tactical ability so I don't understand why people are claiming that he's winning them over. When he was rumoured for the job I thought he was an uninspiring and substandard choice. I feel no different now.

I think his media perception too.
Aside from Dyche he's the best option for England still if they want to appoint an Englishman.

Yes I agree. He hasn't helped himself. He's a very thoughtful manager, his continued use of psychology for teams remains ahead of the game. The fact he devolved coaching to others. He lets others design coaching schedules etc. He just seems to allow himself to get sucked back in needlessly at times.

He showed some nice touches Martina, and before the goal I thought he was doing ok winning some headers. He's ok in possession, but Milner cleaning him out was a bit embaressing for the lad. I don't think he massively wants to be here.

We have Galloway on loan. I appreciate he's had 2 poor loan spells and normally I'd agree with people saying he'll never make it. But I've seen with my own two eyes with him in the first team he'd be a far more secure option at left back than Martina.

I think Martina demeanour doesn't help. He's typical of where his origin is. Hugely laid back and often very reactive.

I thought he wasn't helped for the goal; a lot of times that is a foul.

I thought he won the battle up to the goal, had a torrid twenty minutes but then once Salah went off, understandably peeked up.
His celebration for the penalty was great too.

He's not amazing, but we're stuck with him till January and like it or not, has ear tv his place in the current back four.

What else was it down to? He set us up solidly at the back - I haven't seen us defend properly in a long time - and hoped we would have a chance to nick a goal, which we did. Talking nonsense.

If you listen to his pre match conference, he is very coherent with how he is planning to apply tactics.I can imagine he's great to play for and work for.

He may call a spade a spade but I like the cut of his jib right now.

is anyone seriously won over by today? Delighted by the result but we rode our luck. Klopp's hilarious team selection and mane's even more hilarious 'finishing' was the reason we weren't annihilated.

If our plan was to park the bus and break, it was implemented terribly. The defence were a total shambles at times and we did nothing in attack. The penalty was fortuitous in the extreme. Had we scored from a set-piece of a break I'd give Sam more credit.

Today was everything I feared we'd be under big Sam. I'm buoyed by the result but a million miles from being a fan of this appointment.
Did we play well? Of course not. Where we fearful of a hammering? Of course we were.
What we have taken a draw at the start? In a heartbeat.
As Sam said we tried to stop the best current attacking force in Europe at present and Pickford barely had a shot to save. He admitted we could have played more expansively and produced better football. But would the fans want this and get beat 3-1 or 4-1.

Defence first mate, he’s only been here 10 days the rest comes later.

Awful football awful tactics and If we had of lost everyone would not be kissing his ass. He will bore us all season long

What would you have had him do today Matty? In all honesty he could have played more attacking/free flowing etc but after the debacle of the start of this season, we needed to get back to basics (especially at the back)

In three games he has us defending like a unit, something that seemed a million miles away at St Marys not so long ago. Give the guy a break, he is working the best with what he has been given. After a couple of transfer windows, if we are still doing the same then have a moan until then mate, i'm happy and most i would imagine we are not getting humped every week. It feels a damn sight better getting a 1-1 at Anfield straight after Liverpool had won 5-1 and 7-1 in their previous two games, than losing 4-1 to an absolute crap Southampton.

Baby steps at the moment mate...
