Exactly. Mourinho is hardly known for his 'good football' but is widely considered one of the best and many wanted him here.

Yup, to all the self anointed "purists" on here, what would they rather see I wonder, us playing like Leicester did 2 seasons ago and actually winning something or being some jarg second rate Barca like we were under Bobby brown shoes.

I still find it odd seeing him as our manager tbh.

Boss start so no complaints, I’m intrigued to see where this goes

The track record would suggest approx. 12 months of improvement, 6-12 months of decline, including dodgy transfers and demolishing the clubs finances before leaving with the club much worse off than it was.

But that said, he's never managed a club with our resources and inherited squad ability, so who knows - it may play out differently.

We werent good enough to be classed as a jarg second rate Barca!

You're point stands though, i'd much rather win something than play pretty football. In twenty years no one will care what % of the ball we had in 2017-2018.

Where exactly has that happened in his History?
Certainly not in any of his last four jobs.

Yes, except for Bolton Sunderland West Ham Palace and Newcastle all the other clubs have followed that model.

He had 8 progressive years at Bolton so I’d argue that his track record doesn’t necessarily point to that at all tbh.

The problem he’s going to have here is that unless he wins a pot, his level of acceptance is always going to be meh, and as soon as we have a bad run he’ll have little goodwill in the bank.

It's difficult to compare Everton to any of his previous jobs as we're by far the biggest, most talented and most demanding and expectant club he's been in charge of.

Picked at random to illustrate the stark change in attitude towards ‘Sam’ that pervades the forum recently.

Perhaps, as I read in a recent Guardian article which in part attempts to deconstruct the lyrics of George Michael’s perennial ‘Last Christmas’ to illustrate its underlying sophistication that marks its musical genius, it’s not just about the lies we tell ourselves to cope with rejection, but also the cognitive dissonance of obsessive love. It continues as to how defiance masks hope and how easily love and desire can delude us into forgiveness.

Rather apt for our recent change in mood, perhaps?

But, I wonder, if current style and content under our new ‘messiah’ doesn’t change anytime soon, how long will it be before the throngs pen there own ditty: ‘Boring, boring Ev....’ ?

Makes you think, though.

It is very simple.

As long as we are winning, everyone will be happy.

(well, almost everyone)

Here's the way it works.

Football fans will embrace bad football in perpetuity if it is winning football.

They will tolerate losing football for a while if it is good football.

What they will not endure is bad, losing football.

If Sam keeps within the former category he will be lauded round these parts, don't worry 'bout that ;)

Better football will come with confidence. We are now firmly mid table, 9 points off 4th and 8 points off 17th – a position that felt totally out of our reach after the Southampton game. We are equal with the mighty Watford (why would Silva leave a team on the rise for a team like us in free fall they said) and only 4 away from Leicester in 8th. Do well over Christmas and results go our way and we can jump a couple of places. The players have been instructed to not lose, points are far more important than free flowing dominant football at the moment but if we keep winning anyway we can that confidence to take more risks, be more exciting will come and other than the derby we haven’t been awful…. We’ve score some really good team goals. Get a couple of decent players in January and this season can still be salvaged.
