Look at how Stoke have gradually declined after trying to become a Home & Bargain version of Barcelona. Crystal Palace flirted with De Boer for a few weeks before crapping themselves and appointing Hodgson. There's more but I can't be bothered to rack my hungover brain.

I think you'll find that Roy Hodgson has transformed Crystal Palace by introducing an 'attractive' style of football.

And I think that Stoke's decline is due more to their large turnover of staff in the summer than any attempt at more expansive play. Their situation has been made worse as their recent big buy seems to have disappeared without trace.

I'd also rather take 20 % of possession and shouting at the telly and cursing the day I fell in love with this magnificient club only to be jumping up and down the house screaming "WAZZAAAAAA, fookin hell!" with tears streaming down my face and be cleansed of all this negative emotion.
Just yesterday stumbled upon some of last seasons highlights and though we finished 7th it felt as if we had a terrible squad last year. Lukaku always hiding out in the big matches but acting the messiah because he puts 4 in against Bournemouth. Remember how he tried to nick that magnificient goal off Tommo against ManCity and how he insisted on having caught the ball before it went over the line? What an utter prick. So, yeah, I'd rather watch some good old grinding it out with 3 points at the end (or Kloppo trying hard not to cry or Mourinho getting choked by Allardyce, I can see something like that coming) than watching some pricks playing for their own personal glory and just hiding when there's no easy way to do it.

To be honest, my nickname tells it, I'm no scouser by any means and I don't really care too much about what's going on outside of Everton so I didn't understand the stick Big Sam got right before joining. But I certainly thought he could be the right man for us. I had great confidence in him to turn around our defensive misery. Bainesy and Jags get more and more abuse from some of us and I can't really see why. Of course Bainesy can't run up and down the left flank anymore and still be a reliable defender. But in a more defensive setup he has a hell of a lot to offer still. He knows the game inside and out and is as disciplined as they come. When he returns he'll be key for us. Same for Jagielka. Surely he doesn't fit in with an attacking team that has to deal with counter attacks a lot. He's gotten too slow for that (remember how fast the lad used to be?). But in a defensive setup with a tightly structured back four he can still make a difference. It's not necessarily single players that were responsible for our early season misery. I think all of us could agree that the fault lies in the overall setup, the big problem is the huge difference between what Koeman wanted to do and the players he had. We'll probably never understand how anyone could think it was a good idea to go into the new season with only one healthy experienced winger who unfortunately happens to be an indisciplined headcase most of the time. Also, I get the suspicion Koeman wanted to slowly get us set up similarly to Barcelona with a lot of quality passing, fluid positioning and a lot of tactical intelligence. But the players he got just don't fit that bill. Klaassen for example is more of a Thomas Müller-type of player. He isn't someone to take control of a game. Judging from the 3 Ajax matches I watched last season he's more of an anticipatory, flash-of-genius type of player and I think that doesn't work with any of our possible setups. Also, the only thing Sandro replaced of Lukaku is the horrible first touch. Sigurdson needs to be in the centre without having to run too much.

But I have confidence Sam will continue figuring out how to best set up our team and come away with the points we need. I see us playing really tightly in the back, gradually pushing the defensive line forward throughout the game and developing some more confidence on the ball. We can't expect our squad to play tactically brilliant attacking football. I'll settle for highly structured defensive football with effective countering which should also be improved with the likes of 60 grand Seamus Coleman and Yannick back in the squad. We should really look for a decent second winger and a target man who can hold up the ball (unlike Lukaku did, the utter prick with his rubber feet) to relieve some pressure and who we can feed some decent crosses to.

Bored mate?

It appears the general consensus is that we now play long ball or we get beaten. Personally I don't hold to this, I think we can play attractive football and win and do so without matching the spending of Man City.
I fear for our future, Fat Sam has a record of making teams ordinary. Long ball football will get you points, it will ensure our Premier League status but we won't win anything.
I am hoping that moves are afoot to bring in a new manager this summer, one who has a 3/4 year plan to improve not only our chances of winning something but also our football.

Palace have the remnants of an Fat Sam Defence to build on.

Plus Hodgson has had the Palace job for two months, Sam's only been here two weeks

The remnants of a Fat Sam defence didn't contribute very much when de Boer was in charge.

When Hodgson arrived, Palace had lost all four games without scoring a single goal. They are now on 17 points. You can't say that he hasn't transformed them!

Can you summarise in a sentence mate?

He's said it numerous time, He's started by sorting out the defence, when he's happy with that he'll move forward in the team. At the moment he's not really worked with the midfield or attack and pretty much left them to it.

He's also made comments before about not changing too much too quickly. If you institute a completely different way of playing overnight then there will be problems. At the moment he's simplyfying things to give the team confidence and shape. He's been here a fortnight, our current 'style' is not the finished article.

That's because he tried to change the way they played and overloaded them until they lost confidence. Hodgson is another old school manager, all he's done is take them back to the way Sam had them set up at the back.

Anyone who can get Williams, who looked like he'd never seen a football this season, to start doing the basic things like actually defending again, is obviously doing something right.
Confidence obviously plays a massive part, and wins clearly help, but we just look different somehow.

I think Big Sam’s main contribution to Williams’ improvement is having us sit deep. Not exposing him too much. Especially important with Cuco outside him.

Whilst he’s publically saying nice things about them (as any good manager should), I would be amazed if he’s not lining up a first choice LCB & LB in Jan.

He has employed the same simple approach to all the teams he has been with, I can't see him having a "road to Damascus" conversion to the beautiful game at this stage.

Being sturdy at the back is one thing but to escape relegation you have to win games as well. He had Benteke scoring 25 goals last season, Old man Defoe scoring 16 the season before that.
It's not as if he doesn't set out to win winnable games.
By January I bet we'll be creating far more chance going forward and more than set up for a big striker to come in and make the most of them.
