Glad to hear him speak of complacency in his press conf.

How many times over the last 20 years have we had a good result, only to get turned over by “lesser opposition”. “So Everton” etc....

I understand he prepares for games very specifically & has a game plan for each opposition. Maybe that kind of psychology can give us the consistency we’ve been missing.

His autobiog is worth a read. He got the idea for his systems from playing at Tampa Bay and sharing facilities with the Tampa Bay Bucs NFL squad. Their fitness regimes left nothing to chance and the opposition were closely analysed.
Fergie writes the forward to the book in which he recalls walking along a corridor at Blackburn post-match and noticing a roomful of researchers glued to screens rerunning the game and other games.
It may not work for us but it's interesting.

That's because he tried to change the way they played and overloaded them until they lost confidence. Hodgson is another old school manager, all he's done is take them back to the way Sam had them set up at the back.

It's true that a manager may aspire to a particular style, but in practice has to find a style appropriate for his players. But Hodgson and Allardyce do not come from the same school.

Being sturdy at the back is one thing but to escape relegation you have to win games as well. He had Benteke scoring 25 goals last season, Old man Defoe scoring 16 the season before that.
It's not as if he doesn't set out to win winnable games.
By January I bet we'll be creating far more chance going forward and more than set up for a big striker to come in and make the most of them.

There is a distinction between winning games and playing attractive football. Although Benteke scored 25 league goals and Defoe 15 league goals, Allardyce did not manage either Sunderland or Palace for the full season. I hope he doesn't sign Carroll.

Spot on post.

The best managers, when not backed with ridiculous wealth at least, have ambition (which late-era Moyes lacked) but also a degree of pragmatism (which Martinez lacked) as well as the ability to drop their ego and do what is needed to be done in the short term (which Koeman lacked).
Agreed. Conte and Mourinho are two of the very best and don’t think twice about tightening things up with defensive solidity in mind.

I must admit I’m impressed with how quickly Allardyce has got us defending well. I’m not sure if that’s more to do with how bad we were under Koeman this year or if Allardyce is really that good.

In any case I think we’ll be pleasantly surprised by what Allardyce does here.
I think you'll find that Roy Hodgson has transformed Crystal Palace by introducing an 'attractive' style of football.

And I think that Stoke's decline is due more to their large turnover of staff in the summer than any attempt at more expansive play. Their situation has been made worse as their recent big buy seems to have disappeared without trace.
Has he? Genuine question as I’ve not watched them at all. However, I’ve got no doubt that Hodgson was brought in to adapt a more pragmatic approach than under De Boer. The last think Hodgson is reknowned for is his ability to set up free flowing attacking teams.

Stoke have gone from a team where anyone in the league would have feared playing away at, to one that ships goals most weeks. I don’t think that fact and them moving away from a Tony Pulis style side aren’t related.

Danny Murphy on Roy Hodgson at Fulham;

"He changed the whole way we were playing," said Danny Murphy, whose header at Fratton Park on the final day had kept the side up. "He made us more of a footballing team than the direct‑ball team under Lawrie. It hadn't been ideal for the players we had: we had footballers, rather than just 6ft 2in athletes."

And Mark Hughes has won more points per match for Stoke City than any other manager.

Games: 163 Wins: 56 Points per game: 1.29 "Hughes has worked wonders with Stoke, turning them from long-ball specialists to a proper football-playing club... sometimes. 1.29 points per game is still good for only 18th." The Sun

How did Hodgson do with Liverpool and England?

You make a good point with Hughes. But Stoke are doing terribly now and haven’t progressed after Hughes initially impressed.
