I think anyone in the immediate aftermath of the 4-1 defeat at S'ton would have been questioning the players ability to get us clear. But Unsworth's last outing secured a 4-0 victory and he oversaw a jump of a few places in the PL. That allows me to assert that Allardyce came into a settling situation.

There's no question in my mind that if Unsworth had been made manager after Koeman left the players would have been determined to impress him as much as they have been to impress Allardyce. The board threw Unsworth in at the deep end with weights attached to his feet: inheriting Koeman's failure signings, a load of EL dead matches and expecting him to gain control of rebellious players when taking them on a game-to-game basis. DU struggled impressively with that load and did as well as could be expected. BTW, Allardyce now claiming that West Ham result as his own does a disservice to a feller who'll be remembered at Everton when he's long forgotten as an embarrassing detour.

I'd like to think you're right about the players reacting differently in Unsworth had been made permanent manager, but I'm by no means convinced that would have been the case. In fact, I don't think the senior pros would have acted much differently, which probably says as much about them, and modern football in general as it does Rhino, but them's the times we live in.

Personally I think the 4-0 over West Ham was due to :-

  • The players knowing it was Rhino's last game in charge, and they were feeling a bit guilty about not totally pulling their weight for him, so wanted to give him a decent send off
  • The players knowing Allardyce was around, so knew they had to knuckle down
  • A bit of luck when they missed their penalty

I think he's everything I thought he'd be: a big character who's in the confidence business. He's just taken all the pressure off.

I dont mind him at all. I'm just waiting though for some dodginess to happen. I notice the other day we were linked with Tompkins who's a player who shares the same agent as Allardyce - a caper Allardyce has been mixed up with before.

Gosh Dave, the number of managers who share an agent with some of their players must be into the hundreds...hardly food for the honey monster which is your 'agenda'. To my mind its not a bad thing that we have close relations with some of the top agents...its not illegal.
I think in general, re SAm ,we need to wait and see and not broadcast scary conjecture. If this is his last job he will want to go out on a high, and prove that he was more than a firefighter(I always thought he was better than the jobs he got, in general)

I don't think we could use Tomkins, and Jon Obi Mikel, who has also been linked, is surely well into the veteran stage now?

I dont think he learns from mistakes of that nature.

He's always got a stunt like that in him. He cant help himself. He's probably on his best contract of his career here at Everton, but he'd just do it for the buzz or something.

Win the next Derby and he has a free hand to do what ever he likes, its a results business, everyone in the game seems dodgy these days anyway

I'm rubbish at chucking links up, but the full interview with Sam & Carra is on sky's website now.

An absolutely fascinating & refreshing interview. Very hard to fault anything San says. Great read

I doubt we'll see as free-flowing football again while Allardyce is here. I think that says a lot about Allardyce's input into that particular game.

Well he got into trouble before over purchasing players off a single agent he was working with. IIRC Walter Smith was similarly under suspicion with his dealings with Dennis Roach.

You will have to end up figuratively kneeling at Sam's feet in the next twelve months or so mate.
Personally I can't wait !
