Ok, i am going to disagree with this notion of Moyes 'got everton'.

He didn't, or at least the everton we used to be. We used to be a club that won things, that challenged for league titles, sure we had times away from that but being the 4th most succesfull club in the country doesn't come from being unsuccesful.

What moyes did is turn us into the club we are today (minus the bleedin circus we are now). the underachievers, the bottlers, a club that essentially is going nowhere any time soon. That is us, it is now part of our DNA. Winning used to be part of our DNA, we were the mighty everton, even when we were crap we could beat anyone on our day, Derbys included. Now what? 8 years since we last won against liverpool, 23 years since a last trophy, actually got worse when other clubs like spurs have improved beyond us.

So Moyes didn't get everton. He may have done a good job under difficult contraints and we should be thankful we aren't in the championship now because of him. We should be thankful he brought some great players here, and installed team spirit.

but he never got who we were, and now we are David Moyes' Everton, Terrified of taking a chance.

Fantastic post this.

Like you say he done a decent job under constraints but ultimately he was an integral part of the circle of mediocrity. No pressure to win anything and in return no pressure put on the suits above.

How can he have turned us into bottlers if we need to be grateful to him that we're not in the Championship? He didn't make us the club we are, we were a shambles before he came, an absolute basket case of a club. He did a good job in the circumstances, better than three or four managers before him and better than three or four after. He wasn't the great manager we wanted but trying to blame him for the fact that we hadn't won a trophy for years before he came and haven't for years after is just a bit weird to be honest.
Because mate, being best of the rest won nothing. All the cup semi finals and finals we win nothing.

Every derby game we had a genuine chance of winning over the past 8 years we have bottled, every anfield derby we have bottled. Since moyes arrived here the DNA has always been about being the underdog no matter who we play and it remains even now.

It's all well and good managing on a budget but wins nothing. We should be grateful because 2 years we spent nothing and more than since sold to pay the bills. So that's why we should be grateful , we deserved to go down with a chairman like that.

But at the same time we never got any closer to winning anything and the Everton spirit that was at the club has long since turned into such a cowardly attitude no matter who has managed us since

But that's not the point is it?

I'm not saying he was great, far from it, simply that it wasn't him that brought a new mentality to the club. I don't know if you were around in the 90s but we were dancing on the pitch to celebrate staying up on the last day, saying that Moyes was to blame for us no longer being the 'mighty' Everton is just plain wrong.

I said the other day, football has changed, and because Moyes happened to be in charge when it really took hold, a lot of fans think he was the cause of it rather than a victim of it. We started to think finishing 5th was great not because he'd lowered expectations but because suddenly it was great. Winning the league was no longer a realistic possibility, and 4th was (is) now seen as genuine success in a way that it never was before. It was money coming into the game which changed our expectations, not the dour attitude of our decent but unfortunately fairly limited manager.

There’s no denying he done a good job at us, he had 10 years here where he could lay foundations throughout the club and worked under Bill with zero pressure on him. That’s not feasible to do at clubs anymore. Ive seen absolutely nothing since Moyes left us to think he would come back and do a good job, he has a small time mentality and as recently as last season just got a team relegated!

Come on mate as good as job as he did I wouldn’t want him anywhere near this club again.
Zero pressure....Zero funds. He went as far as he could take us financialy ?!? (I need spellcheck) we now appear to have money, I would rather try him with a loose purse than let a complete gamble shaft us...yet again.
Saying all that, I do get what your saying though...never usually a good idea to go back. At this moment in time though...the future looks a little bleak...and i wants me some ol comfort.

No pressure to win anything?
Yeah can just imagine that conversation:

BK. - Dave, i’m Expecting a trophy this year or your job is on the line
DM - Ok, Can I have some players to compete with the likes of Henry and Drogba?
BK - You can have Dennis Straqualersi on loan.

You forgot about the stellar signing of " mad " Royston Drenthe ;)

You’ve hit the nail bang on the head with that post! 100% agree.
