To be honest I've kind of got it in for River Plate no marks by default...

He didn't specify which year - 2030, perhaps?
It’s ridiculous. He’s got a guaranteed job, will be on a decent wage and will pay taxes but can’t get a work permit. How does that work???

The Home Office is ultimately responsible for issuing UK work permits.
However, in order to secure a work permit from the Home Office, a footballer's employer must first receive a “Governing Body Endorsement”, or GBE, for that player from The FA.
The FA's application for a GBE can be viewed here. Generally speaking, a club must demonstrate that a non-EU/EEA player is:
- internationally established at the highest level, and
- will make a significant contribution to the development of football at the highest level in the UK.

Based off that it looks like he isn't afraid to throw himself about and can also play a bit. Looks good.
God knows, in Holland it’s salary based I think. Our work permits have always been quite taxing
