2018/19 Seamus Coleman

I’ll pop this in here as having this debate on Silva thread in response to Coleman not stinking the place out, which I unfortunately don’t agree with:

Coleman has been poor in nearly every games he’s played.

It pains me to say that, because I love the bloke. He’s been an absolute joy to watch over the years, fantastic attitude, 1st class role model etc. He’s everything I love about football, because he just gets on with it and never believed his own hype.

But he’s not looked the same player for a while now. Feels like he’s lost his edge. The unwavering energy.

I’ll be ecstatic if he re discovers that form, but right now he’s not done enough to be starting in my opinion.

He used to effect most games he played in. When can you honestly say he last did that? And why do you reckon Utd targeted out right side all day today?

Been saying he’s been crap for ages. More than a blip.

He does seem to have lost a step but he’s still better than Kenny and Walcott did him no favors in a matchup with Martial that was always going to be difficult.
However, that Wan Bissaka guy at Palace seems to be more of what we need. I’m not sold he’s very good going forward, but he’s quick as anything and can defend 1v1.

Kenny compliments Walcott more down the right imo

Probably time for Coleman to get benched. I think in his first game back against Leiecester last season we saw there's still a real player there but he's been very poor this season so far.

It's starting to look like he needs replacing. I love Seamus so it sucks. Kenny is not the answer because he is an absolute liability at the back so Seamus plays for now but I'd say it is an area to look at come January.

Kenny cannot defend mate, which is important for a rb

FFS lads (and ladies)

It's really NOT that bad.

Coleman doesn't look sharp. But in the 10 months since he's come back from injury, he's played a total of 18 games.

18 games over 10 months is nothing, and they have been spread out over successive spells out of the side due to injury.

He wasn't even bad defensively yesterday, btw, and hasn't been all season. In the last two games he has been up against two of the best left wingers in the league and in the main has stood firm. One mistake against Palace yes, but defensively yesterday, even though at times Martial had him on toast, it was when he had burst upfield and left a gap that Martial mainly had joy.

It's his attacking/natural athleticism which seems to be suffering the most, and that is entirely understandable after 10 MONTHS out. He hasn't lost any pace, really, but he seems overly cautious on the ball and that is making him second-guess himself, hence we're seeing sloppy touches/passes. He's then also not powering forward as much because he's worried he doesn't have the stamina to recover.

But that comes with fitness, and I stress, 18 games, sandwiched into wedges of 5-6 games at a time, over an 20 month period in total (10 months since he returned) is NO WHERE NEAR enough to get that fitness back.

The problem we will have with moving Coleman on is the same we had for years with Baines - he's a fan favourite and a great bloke so the echo and fans on social media will be championing him regardless of performance.

Walcott has been slammed but Coleman has got off relatively scott free in terms of media criticism.
