2018/19 Seamus Coleman

The thing is if he knows he’s not been fully fit and his form isn’t good then why has he playing? Kenny is fully fit. Instead Coleman plays not at 100% and then receives criticism for it. He could have waited a few more weeks and come back fully fit over his niggles.
You only get match fit by playing matches
The clue is in the match part of match fit
Bernard , Gomes , and Mina when he eventually starts will all be in the same boat

Here's what the man himself thinks about the whole thing:

Seamus Coleman happy to silence his doubters

Everton defender Seamus Coleman admits he felt he had a point to prove after facing criticism in recent weeks. The Republic of Ireland international scored his first goal for 652 days in the 3-1 win over Brighton and his celebration was suitably emotional with a hands-to-the-ears celebration in front of the Gwladys Street End. However, Coleman, who was sidelined for 10 months after an horrific double fracture of his leg in March 2017, insists he was not having a go back at fans but merely trying to show he was back to his best.

"I'm the first to criticise myself and the last couple of games I've probably not been where I want to be," he said. "I've been out for four weeks and I didn't do a lot of training and part of my game is my fitness but I felt much better, much fitter and I just wanted to prove a point. I am a person who is very capable of taking it on the chin and knowing when I am not good enough. I've been here nine years and had good spells of form and bad spells of form. Players can be very precious over criticism. It's part and parcel of the game. As footballers we all get stick so it's not like I'm having a go back at the fans, it's just me saying 'I'm all right'. When I am fit and at it I am OK. When I came back here in January (for his first game after recovering from his broken leg) and played against Leicester, the reception I got from Everton fans is something which will stay with me for a long time. The fans understand the love I have for them and vice-versa."

While Coleman has not been at his best in recent weeks he refused to look for excuses and insists the leg which was broken has never been a problem for him since making his comeback. "Never for a second. It does not give me a day's bother," he added. "Unfortunately the injury I've had this season (stress fracture of a foot) has turned out to be very frustrating; coming back, pulling out, coming back. But there are no excuses, to play in the Premier League you have to be at the top level and if you are not you get found out. Unfortunately this season I've not been up to my own high standards and I'm the first to admit that. The other thing is because I've scored a goal it doesn't mean I'm the best player in the world."

So give the lad a break, eh ?

El Capitan. ;)

No Toff, you need to get a grip.
On the one hand you say fans are entitled to their view trying to sound all reasonable and then tell them what they should and shouldn't do.
You seem to spend your whole time trying to be sooo supportive of the players and manager, fine in itself, but dare anyone have a contrary view...give it a rest.

There are legitimate arguements for and against Seamus playing on the weekend.
Personally I would have selected Kenny, the reasons for which are obvious. As the reasons for selecting Seamus are.
Who knows, we might have been raving about Kenny after the game if he had played.

I loved Coleman's celebration. It's the type of reaction you want to see, and it just makes my admiration for him greater.
In that little moment of madness he showed what it means, he let slip a bit of feeling. It the sort of thing you do with family.

The discourse between fans and players and players and fans is real at this club. And that's a special thing.

No, defintely things aren't black and white.
You might want to remind your own self of that before you start blurting at others.

Seems a fair few people agree with me on this?

All I stressed with Coleman was the need for context. The need for people to take into account that he's had a dreadful injury and is still recovering. Also that our back-up RB (who was injured anyway) had one of his worst games in an Everton shirt last time out where he was torn to shreds by a full-back who is the same age. Also that Coleman has had two games not at his level, and it just so happens that those two games were against two of the league's best wingers, while he's just come back from breaking his foot.

And I don't begrudge people having a contrary view. I just don't like those contrary views being based on absolutely nothing of substance. Whether you're positive or negative, it isn't too much to ask for people to back up their opinions with facts/views of the game etc, and in both cases to take everything into account.

I don't agree with your team you wanted to see for the match the other day, but at least you provided your logic and reasoning behind it. I still don't think it's the right way to go, but at least you never just put statements out without backing them up. So that post wasn't really aimed at posters such as yourself, or even anyone in particular, it's just a view of the fanbase as a whole.

i.e. it has been a promising start from Silva, given the mess of last season. We could have had more points and probably should have from the start we had, and due to reasons both within our control and not within our control, we haven't got those extra points. Still improvements to be made.

I'm sure most balanced, reasonable fans would agree with that statement, it's nothing groundbreaking. But you know full well that a few weeks back we had people calling for his head because we'd lost to West Ham and Arsenal. Or because we didn't have our best game at Old Trafford we should rip up the team and start again. Or some saying Coleman is finished, without taking the wider context into account.

Agree entirely with you on the celebration. And the fans/players coming together. We're in a good place as a club at the moment, I just don't get this seemingly new impatience with some sections of the support - it's like there always HAS to be something wrong. And even though I'm not saying everything is rosy, because it isn't, I find it weird that there always has to be something to moan about.

The way I saw it...

Game was changed so every pub here was having to show Leicester...

From the highlights it does look a but 'Maximus'.

Im not fussed tbh.

We beat Brighton...and he scored...

Lets see how he does against Chelsea and if he can get to a 7/10 level for a few games before saying hes amazing shall we?

The right side has looked weak this season with neither Walcott or Coleman comparable to our left side.

You can see teams targetting Coleman as a weak link.

Or... in the last two games before Brighton (Palace and Utd) he played against two of the best wingers in the league, both of whom play left side (Zaha starting central, moving left).

Maybe it's not just that they targeted Coleman, but it just so happens that their best players play down that side?

Coleman and Walcott will need to be at their best to try and deal with Hazard on Sunday, but it's not just one team that plays the game, is it...

Thats certainly an interesting point. At the same time, he was annhiliated.

Compare to how Wan Bissaka handled our left side...

Agree Zat.

But again it's the context that needs taking into account. I think a fully fit and raring Coleman has a better chance of dealing with Martial/Zaha (and I don't actually think he got torn to shreds by Martial, btw, because Martial had more joy when Coleman had pushed up so the space was exposed behind him).

I'll fully agree that if he is struggling by spring time then maybe we have seen the best of Seamus, but I think Saturday showed just what he's capable of. I'm sure we'll all be delighted if he can keep it up.

Personally can't see there being much substance in the AWB shouts, as good as he is.

Everton fans have always required a victim, i suppose many sets of fans do, but we seem to be getting infiltrated by loads of blerts who were fed vinegar from their mams tits qnd are sooooooo bitter and quick to jump on players backs. Seamus has been a shadow of himself this season, and has deserved some stick. but getting nailed to a cross? After all the years of top quality service, he deserves more tim to set himself straight. I am not being sentimental here, the current thinking is like the early days of the oils sheiks, when Rolls Royce cars were being abandoned in the desert because they developed a fault?

The lad sufferd a catastrophic injury from which he may never fully recover, but he previous service buys him more than ten games to prive whether he is finished or not? Heads need wobbling and plums need webbing on here sometimes :(

think people are going so OTT about the "abuse" coleman got

I mean I remember people saying he wasn't playing well and maybe Kenny should play instead, does that really qualify as abuse or is it just an opinion?

2 things are certain on here 1) people moaning about everton 2) people moaning about people moaning about everton

I also don't think it was 'abuse' levels but it was certainly massively short sighted & massively quick to condemn a player like Coleman to the slag heap because he has not come back quite as good as he was before a horrendous injury and then a few weeks out with another injury. It was as if a few people don't like him and soon as a few bad games comes about they pounce.

The guy is blue through and through, he has been a great servant to this club (and in my opinion will continue to be even after he stops playing). If ever a player has earned respect and patience to be shown it is Seamus Coleman.

I agree it's silly to write someone off fully but lets be honest he broke his leg nearly 2 years ago and has been back a good 9 months from that so being match fit isn't a problem ( I know he's a few weeks out since ) he hasn't really looked the same since his injury which is unfortunate but it happens in football

hopefully Saturday is the start of him getting his form back because he's badly been missed but deffo hasn't been abused as some are making out
