2018/19 Seamus Coleman

I actually think his celebration was completely out of order.

What example does that set to other players?

As captain of the football club, he should never ever question or disrespect the fans. He’s been awful recently but hasn’t been boo’d or jeered. He’s one of the fans most popular players, yet he pushes everyone out the way to celebrate in front of the street end with his hand to his ear?

Gobshite move imo.

The thing is if he knows he’s not been fully fit and his form isn’t good then why has he playing? Kenny is fully fit. Instead Coleman plays not at 100% and then receives criticism for it. He could have waited a few more weeks and come back fully fit over his niggles.

Fans are entitled to their view.

But fans also should look at things in context.

Far too often now with Evertonians everything is black and white.

Playing badly? Drop them.

Getting on a bit? Sell.

Bad injury? CAREER OVER.

We - as a fanbase - need to collectively get a grip.
No Toff, you need to get a grip.
On the one hand you say fans are entitled to their view trying to sound all reasonable and then tell them what they should and shouldn't do.
You seem to spend your whole time trying to be sooo supportive of the players and manager, fine in itself, but dare anyone have a contrary view...give it a rest.

There are legitimate arguements for and against Seamus playing on the weekend.
Personally I would have selected Kenny, the reasons for which are obvious. As the reasons for selecting Seamus are.
Who knows, we might have been raving about Kenny after the game if he had played.

I loved Coleman's celebration. It's the type of reaction you want to see, and it just makes my admiration for him greater.
In that little moment of madness he showed what it means, he let slip a bit of feeling. It the sort of thing you do with family.

The discourse between fans and players and players and fans is real at this club. And that's a special thing.

No, defintely things aren't black and white.
You might want to remind your own self of that before you start blurting at others.

Here's what the man himself thinks about the whole thing:

Seamus Coleman happy to silence his doubters

Everton defender Seamus Coleman admits he felt he had a point to prove after facing criticism in recent weeks. The Republic of Ireland international scored his first goal for 652 days in the 3-1 win over Brighton and his celebration was suitably emotional with a hands-to-the-ears celebration in front of the Gwladys Street End. However, Coleman, who was sidelined for 10 months after an horrific double fracture of his leg in March 2017, insists he was not having a go back at fans but merely trying to show he was back to his best.

"I'm the first to criticise myself and the last couple of games I've probably not been where I want to be," he said. "I've been out for four weeks and I didn't do a lot of training and part of my game is my fitness but I felt much better, much fitter and I just wanted to prove a point. I am a person who is very capable of taking it on the chin and knowing when I am not good enough. I've been here nine years and had good spells of form and bad spells of form. Players can be very precious over criticism. It's part and parcel of the game. As footballers we all get stick so it's not like I'm having a go back at the fans, it's just me saying 'I'm all right'. When I am fit and at it I am OK. When I came back here in January (for his first game after recovering from his broken leg) and played against Leicester, the reception I got from Everton fans is something which will stay with me for a long time. The fans understand the love I have for them and vice-versa."

While Coleman has not been at his best in recent weeks he refused to look for excuses and insists the leg which was broken has never been a problem for him since making his comeback. "Never for a second. It does not give me a day's bother," he added. "Unfortunately the injury I've had this season (stress fracture of a foot) has turned out to be very frustrating; coming back, pulling out, coming back. But there are no excuses, to play in the Premier League you have to be at the top level and if you are not you get found out. Unfortunately this season I've not been up to my own high standards and I'm the first to admit that. The other thing is because I've scored a goal it doesn't mean I'm the best player in the world."

Don't mind the celebration as long as he keeps the levels up from here on. Not saying he should score every week but if more often than not goals are being conceded from his side of the pitch or due to obvious errors he has made then a goal every now and again doesn't make up for it.

No one on here wishes Seamus ill, we love his passion and the fact he is a fighter so let's hope this was just a blip and we all get to see him again being one of our best players. However that said the good news as a team and bad news for him individually is he is going to find it harder to stand out nowadays because the talent on the pitch has improved massively. Before we may have needed Coleman to make the difference or provide a goal to win us a game, now we just need him to be functional and assist our forwards when required but ensure defensively that he is a rock.
