Under Koeman the fullbacks are more defensively minded, there is no more reckless bombing forward.
I don't think it is an issue of players playing better or worse in most cases it is players playing differently.

Yep, I said this in another thread about Baines.

The emphasis on the full backs is different (so far) than under Martinez or even Moyes.

They're being asked to get forward less and as a result you're going to ntoice their attacking contributions less and less, this is one of the major things that is helping us become more solid

Look at Mourinho's sides - he rarely has adventurous full backs, think we may have to get used to that.

Coleman and Baines were both really solid last night - got tight when their men had their back to goal, pressed when the time was right and defended narrow enough to keep the defence tight.

I'm preparing myself for a lot of people saying Baines and Coleman are having bad seasons, but to me Baines in particular has been one of the ones who has really grasped Koeman's change of emphasis. Was a good start for Coleman last night too I thought, we'll see if it continues as he has genuine competition now from Holgate.

when he was scoring goals he looked a ridiculous threat for a rb and that's what elevated him to the status of 'best rb in the league'

nice to see a solid performance from him, but his threat going forward is the major advantage he offers over holgate

It is, but he has more experience and the change in emphasis on our full backs means you're probably not going to see a huge attacking threat from him, through no real fault of his own

I will 100% stand by the stance that players only lose their place due to injury when their replacement clearly proves to be the better player. People always say 'what message does that send to young players'...when the message is far more negative to an established starter if he loses his place due to an injury.

If fit the established starter must be allowed to lose his place on form...not injury. They were the starter for a reason.

*edit...he's not even a RB ffs

Not a right back? How do come to that theory? Surely if he plays there... And plays well... He is a right back. Just like Galloway is a left back. Holgate is not ready to play CB ... And hasn't played there for us.. So how can you call him a CB when you have never seen him play there... ? Actually lol the game against Spurs ( the game you criticised him for) he played as a centre back ... His best performances came at right back.

I was about to say just this. Our fullbacks don't need to always join the attack as much anymore because we finally have a good stable of wingers. This also allows us to defend much better, so for all of the crap Baines has gotten this season, he has been much better defensively as a result of not having to run himself ragged.
